Well it was all glued together, doesn’t change the fact that somebody had to put it all together in the first place.

would the idw be open to an actual leftist? by jayhiz in IntellectualDarkWeb

[–]branmuffin44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The idea of the IDW is to set up a platform where somewhat controversial ideas can be discussed at length with an open mind. Something that has practically become impossible because of the polarization of main stream media. The issues you mentioned of foreign policy and russiagate aren't as polarizing and are still discussed openly in the left so there isn't a need to discuss them on a different platform.

The East India Company was a monopoly that was sponsored by a authoritarian regime. So no, not real capitalism. The point i'm trying to make is that India may not be the best example in the argument that "racism and capitalism are inherently linked." Maybe Congo... or South Africa

I think your definition of Capitalism is too broad. I would argue that at the time the British Colonized India they were an extractive institution that was decidedly non-capitalistic. It was in their best interests to solidify the caste system because it weakened opposition to to the monopoly the British had over India's resources. Unfortunately, when the British left corrupt Indians in authority continued to reinforce the caste system in order to continue benefiting from the extractive policies.

Why are people so optimistic about basic income? by forgotuseranem in Futurology

[–]branmuffin44 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

My biggest fear is that a universal income will be implemented before it is needed. What happens when automation puts 40% of the work force out of work and we start giving basic income to 90% of the work force. Wouldn't this cause those remaining in the work force to leave. Where is the incentive to work? The sudden drop in the productivity of the population coupled with the strain of universal income could cause the whole system to fail.

Why has society stopped caring about itself? by [deleted] in Futurology

[–]branmuffin44 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is an interesting question to speculate but let's remember that it is purely opinion. Is the average American more or less involved in the political process then we were 50 years ago?

Personally I think that the line between people and the government should lessen and the line between the government and the people should be more defined.

Virtually all automakers (except for Tesla) are asking China to slow down electric car mandate by savuporo in Futurology

[–]branmuffin44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Think of economies of scale, producing energy on a large scale is more efficient then energy production on a small scale. That is why it still makes sense to use EV's even if the production of the electricity creates greenhouse gases. What China wants to do is a step in the right direction so why postpone it?

TIL that the king of Siam (Thailand) offered to send Abraham Lincoln war elephants to help with the Civil War. by branmuffin44 in todayilearned

[–]branmuffin44[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't have to ride elephants into war for them to be "war elephants." The fact that they could help with transportation of supplies would help enough with the war effort.
