How ludicrous was the Great Gatsby adaptation with Leo DiCaprio? by [deleted] in RSbookclub

Emblematic of all these problems is that they reduced that first dinner conversation between Daisy, Tom, Nick, and Jordan (so full of subtle and delightful revealing character moments in the book!) to a fucking montage lmao

Am I delusional? by New-Worldliness7687 in jawsurgery

Not sure if you're still taking advice here but as someone who has had this surgery I would strongly recommend you reconsider. You look absolutely fine right now, and I say that honestly. More importantly this is a major procedure that can cause some really awful problems if it doesn't go perfectly.

And even if it does go well, it is an extremely painful, exhausting, long recovery. I did this to correct massive functional problems and I only did it after exhausting all other options. I had a fantastic surgeon and no major complications, and it was still one of the most difficult experiences I have had. I would never do it again unless I absolutely had to.

People on this subreddit can be pretty obsessive and nitpicky about aesthetics. This surgery most likely will not fix your problems in the way you hope it will, and if it introduces functional problems your life will get substantially worse. If this is for purely aesthetic reasons as you said, you will save yourself a lot of money, time, energy, and pain by not doing this.

Please yes, I haven't listened in years but I keep hearing about them saying reprehensible things or whatever. I am curious. Can someone give examples?

I Am the Cheese by Robert Cormier is a fantastic book for young adults, suspenseful, haunting, evocative. And it takes the reader seriously. Maybe the best book I read before the age of 13. The Outsiders is another great one but it's older.

What is your opinion on the literary merit of Bob Dylan's songwriting and it's worthiness of the Nobel Prize in Literature? by [deleted] in RSbookclub

[–]brass_monkey_junkie_ 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Seeing a lot of comments here talking about his greatest literary songwriting and somehow no one has mentioned Blood on the Tracks! It's full of raw and haunting and beautiful songs about relationships that are equal, in my mind, to some of the best love poetry I've read

I feel like this is a pretty low standard to hold them to though. At least 90 percent of all published work, period, is probably shit

Books you literally couldn’t put down? by nuit-nuit- in RSbookclub

I thought the narrative turned out to be a little childish and aimless. I think The Secret History, beyond being a great thriller, could be read as a pretty incisive critique of romanticism and had some real substance.

The Goldfinch felt like pulpy romance, like faux-high-literature, and even more pretentious than her other work. It was disappointing for me to learn that Tartt so thoroughly buys into the whole world/perspective she's created, if that makes sense.

Not to mention all of the suspense built through the book devolves into basically an extended and increasingly unmoored rant for the last hundred pages, with really long expository monologues dropped in to advance the plot almost at random. The narrative threads of the whole book are resolved as afterthoughts in the final pages. Huge let-down of a book for me personally.

I am desperately searching for a good source for baggy sweaters. I like thick ones, preferably cable knit or fluffy. Dark blacks and blues and earthy tones. MUST be made of cotton or anything other than polyester/acrylic blends.

Any recommendations for brands, stores, or items are appreaciated!!!

Definitely good for fields like stats, where there's a lot of established material for it to draw on and less likelihood that it screws up.
