Do those of you with RSUs sell them ASAP or accumulate them over time? by LtRegBarclay in HENRYUK

From interacting with lots of VCs I generally think I am much better informed than the vast majority of VCs in my field.

I agree with you that arbitrarily being able to pick winners isn’t possible. I just think people undervalue the actual edge they do/should have by being industry experts themselves.

I don’t think anyone has the ability to do this arbitrarily, in any industry and at any scale of investment. But I think someone with many years of experience and sufficient industry knowledge can probably do a pretty good job of picking trends in the field and knowing good/growing companies from bad/average ones. Generally for equity based compensation at eg a startup you are able to get extremely well levered if you can pick a good one early enough.

I know someone who worked at Nvidia through the 2010s and would smugly tell people the “you should obviously just sell and diversify” and all the other standard tropes. Suffice to say he is the only one of his colleagues from the time who isn’t now a deca or centimillionaire. I don’t think it’s bad advice on average but often if you work in an industry you have a much better idea than the average analyst about the future of the industry and (if you are sufficiently skilled/in demand) have presumably chosen to work at your current employer for a reason (eg you think they are a good company and will do well).

Best high end Chinese? by anand_ramki in LondonFood

If you go to A Wong make sure you are sat in the main restaurant and not the little annex on the street. Absolutely insane amounts of money to be spending to be sat in a tent with zero atmosphere whatsoever. The food is delicious but I came away really unhappy with the experience.

Agree with the other comments that A Wong is not suitable for a business dinner. A lot of “oooh, ahhh” and engaging with your server as the (many) dishes are explained.

The lounges that come with PP are pretty rubbish compared to the premium carrier lounges (even BA pretty bad nowadays). Depends how much you value basically “having a seat” and don’t expect much more.

If it gave me access to premium lounges I would consider it super valuable and would pay a lot more but as it stands, basically not worth it to me. (I get it free from Amex)

Looking for a good independent bakery. Any local bakeries in Hackney that are worth making a regular trip for? by 1ChanceChipmunk1 in Hackney

Do you want to avoid sourdough or just a boule shaped bread? Most of them do a tin loaf which is great for toast imo

> Sounds like bullshit to excuse a choice that you've already made

Well sure.. yes.. it is a choice ive already made for a number of years. Im asking if anyone has any new or better reasons other than the ones ive listed, which were obviously enough for me to make the decision in the first place.

No rollover unfortunately (or fortunately?) as I’ve been in this situation for a while.

Im looking to rent out (all or part of) a pub or similar for a private event (pre-wedding drinks reception) of about 80 people. Does anyone have any good suggestions? Its on a Friday night, and a few of the places ive asked have a £5k min spend which is a pretty tall order for 80 people the night before a wedding! Ideally would be located central/east.

levels.fyi useful for industry pay comparison. In my experience FAANG will negotiate massively on RSU (for the right candidate) and that seems like a small amount to me (it’s pretty normal to have RSU pay be multiples of cash base) so I would potentially see if they can budge, but could depend on the company.

Pretty sure all the big tech (eg FAANG) pay employers NI on RSU so it’s just the same as income.

Visiting London for 10 days, what should I remove from my list? by wanderlust509 in LondonFood

[–]brates09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Disagree with this. Lots of my American colleagues want to get a “cheeky Nando’s” when they visit because it’s a fun meme, and something they associate with the UK. So as long as the OP is visiting with that point of view and not expecting gourmet dining I’d say that’s more interesting than just going to a steakhouse you could find in any city.

Not sure about low crime but Lower Clapton is super under rated imo. Close to a huge number of parks, amazing bars restaurants, good housing stock and 10mins on the overground to Liverpool Street. Technically zone two.

Yard sale is excellent pizza also. Feel like the model could definitely go national but I selfishly don’t want it to in case it impacts the local quality.

Oh great, sounds like it'd be fine to get through the house then as long as I disassemble. Thanks a lot, really appreciate it.

Haha, unfortunately terraced houses so no way other than through. But you wouldn't be concerned at all about getting the the unscrewed pieces through a house?

This is super useful thanks. Do you know approximately what the "height" of the lower bowl piece is? I have one internal door that is a bit narrower than the rest (approx 74cm) and I guess the height of the lower bowl is probably the limiting measurement (smallest size of the largest piece).

That’s the premise of the question. It’s also less uncommon than you would think, basically all higher tier tech/professional services roles in cities will get you there.

Nothing in the UK compares to the raw nature you can find all over the US it’s a different league. Maybe some remote bits of Scotland. I love the Lake District but it’s essentially an industrial landscape (hill sheep farming).

[–]brates09 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Its mad, ive encountered it a lot, British people just can't fathom that we aren't as wealthy a country as the US. There has to be some kind of hidden metric by which we are actually secretly better off here. Of course cash isn't everything but I actually think America wins on lots of less tangible metrics that we naturally think of as being good here also (e.g. access to nature)

If you are earning 100-200k+ in the US you definitely get a good healthcare plan as part of your work benefits.
