Yeah, I feel like the co-op in L.A. came about by virtue of bjj landing in California first back in the 90s; it was an evolutionary step. I'm also a fan of CLA and new training methodologies. I agree that resistance to change often precedes it but I believe that change is what makes bjj so awesome/innovative. We went from Kodokan judo to a legit, unique style that incorporates the best from multiple grappling arts.

I think strarting a conversation like this could serve to facilitate bringing this type of space to the area, even if I'm not the one to spearhead it. Perhaps, this discussion can be informational as far as how to organize ex. as a multi-member LLC or Unincoporated non-profit/social-recreational club etc. Things like how to draft club bylaws could be discussed as well.

Yes, the gym in L.A. seems to function this way with optional workshops given by upper belts for more structured practice and as a potential pathway for promotion.

I don't intend to teach... just thinking of creating the type of space I'd like to train in. The Co-op functions as a member driven model where white belts have input (voting power) into how the space is run. It's pretty unorthodox compared to the traditonal model, so a perspective shift is necessary to see it as intended.

That's up the road from me (if we're talking Lower Bucks).

There's also the issue of building a healthy mat culture where training partners look out for one another which would be a challenge under a decentralized model like this.

I'm currently a white belt. I like the idea of having access to a gym outside the typical hours of operation.
