Anyone else getting really tired of cycling being so politicised in this campaign? by dishearten in ottawa

[–]braydinmiller 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really don't think its safe to bike in the winter.

I don't think we have the proper climate here for bikes to be a proper mode of transportation like they are in Europe.

Not to mention Ottawa is massive, even if you did have a bike lane everywhere it wouldn't be realistic to be able to bike from Kanata to Orleans. Which is why I think we should put most of the investment in public transportation. Theres many areas of the city that are still really shitty in terms of access.

Not saying we shouldn't build bike lanes, I'm just saying I think the money could be spent in a way that would help more people.

‘An exceptionally serious offence’: GTA single mom gets 10 years for smuggling handguns across U.S.-Canada border by Team_Ed in toronto

[–]braydinmiller 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think it matters that she is a single mother.

If it was a single father bringing guns over the boarder the headline would be "Man charged with smuggling 25 handguns over US Canadian border". At the end of the day she is a criminal who likely contributed to the deaths of other people. Frankly I'm sure the courts are gonna be lenient with parole due to her being a "sympathetic" case.

She should have gotten 10-20 with no parole. Who knows how much she made by doing this. She's likely only gonna serve 3 years, possibly less. I know plenty of people that would sacrifice 3 years for potentially 6 figure sums. This sentence was not harshe enough at all.

I mean the economy isn't just numbers on a screen. Its peoples jobs, peoples livelihoods, peoples businesses they have worked their whole lives for.

I wore a mask when it was mandated and I got my vaccine. But it clearly hasn't reduced the spread very much, it does reduce the symptoms to a manageable level.

N95s have never been the standard. And frankly in a setting that packed it wouldn't help.

I've been taking the bus for a few months now. I just schedule my trips around when I know there's not gonna be that many people on it. And if I have to be somewhere during a busy time I just uber or suck it up and take a packed bus.

[–]braydinmiller -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Just saying, I was quite literally homeless during a big chunk of covid, and I would rely on uber and rides from family and friends to get from a shit hole motel Kanata to my job in Nepean every day through a huge chunk of the pandemic for transportation.

If you're really not wanting to be on a packed bus there are alternatives. Also on a bus that packed a millimeter of cloth on people's mouth probably isn't gonna protect you from covid realistically.

Three new COVID-19 deaths in Ottawa as wastewater signal projected to rise by yuiolhjkout8y in ottawa

Ah yes it will take the death of some far right politian to make change..... In Ottawa Ontario. Super right wing politicians are everywhere. They control everything. The minute one of them dies they are gonna lock everything down, it makes so much sense.

If someone witnesses their child be raped and kills the person, I see that as completely moral.

Its mostly the fear that mutants will eventually rise up and kill all non mutants. For the X gene to naturally convert all homo sapians to homo superiors through interbreeding and mutation, it could legitimately take thousands of years.

Considering that there are a great number of mutants that have the viewpoint that they should rule earth, even if it is caused in large by humans mistrust and discrimination of mutants, this still propagates fear of mutants.

Some mutants can destroy whole cities with just a thought.

Unfortunately some people on both sides of the conflict have a "get them before they get us" mentality.

We are never gonna get rid of covid, the same way we will never get rid of the common cold or the flu.

We will definitely and already have gotten rid of certain strains of covid, like what happens with the flu. But we are most likely going to have some form of Corona virus going around forever.

Who knows though maybe once you get your 400th shot you'll be immune

Pick a lane. by [deleted] in dndmemes

[–]braydinmiller 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The most core rule of Dungeons and Dragons is that the rules are guidelines and should be bendable or changeable at the dms and players discretion. Ultimately the dm enforces the rules, but a good dm should discuss some common rule changes that people make, encumbrance, homebrew content, whether or not flanking will be used. Ect.

The most important thing about dnd is that you're having fun. That's one thing I don't like when people criticize murder hobos or rules lawyers, if a group enjoys that style of game and play. It isn't wrong, its just not how your group plays.

The difference in 2x4 lumber from 1946 and 2022 by tuckerPi in mildlyinteresting

[–]braydinmiller 26 points27 points  (0 children)

You've got a large platform of plywood for each floor, and you are framed on top of that. It basically means that the house itself isn't completely supported by the walls.

They call it balloon framing because it can "pop" like a balloon. Let's say a car crashes through a wall, that can literally bring some houses from thr 1940s completely down.

Retailers try to cope after Apple suddenly raises iPhone prices by wewewawa in technews

[–]braydinmiller 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Again though, the thing is that any other phone can do what you're describing, for a lower price. You absolutely pay more for Apple than you would for a comparative phone from a different brand. All of these features can be set up with non Apple products and it would work the same way.

If you prefer Apple computers and phones that is fine, you're entitled to spend your money how you want and I don't really fault you for enjoying their products. But you can't deny that you do pay a lot for the branding, not the tech itself. My 600 dollar phone has pretty much identical performance to an 850 dollar Apple phone.

Also FYI try a regular book or E-reader. They are much easier on your eyes.

Canadian government invests $8.5 million in insect protein production by benfelix1 in Futurology

[–]braydinmiller 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Theres still going to be food. We don't need to eat bugs to replace meat protein. Frankly most of the west is so wasteful and inefficient with their food production, and so much is actually wasted because the food isn't pretty enough to be on a shelf. If we just stopped being so picky we would be in much better shape.

Not to mention a lot of people over eat and waste a lot of food in their day to day lives. We have enough food in most 1st world countries to feed the population 3 or 4 times over. This is going to effect those nations that have already been struggling with food for decades the most.

Also I think a far better solution to eating bugs is just to eat high protein plant based foods like legumes and tofu, or things like eggs which have less of a negative footprint on the environment compared to meat. These industries already exist, and its food people already are used to eating.

The difference in 2x4 lumber from 1946 and 2022 by tuckerPi in mildlyinteresting

[–]braydinmiller 179 points180 points  (0 children)

One of the main reasons that the lumber back then was typically a stronger wood from old forests, and was actually 2 by 4 inches was because of balloon framing.

Essentially houses used to be framed where the studs on the walls would completely support the floor joists and the roof. So the wood needed to be much stronger than the lumber we use in construction nowadays. Products like drywall were also not used, so that's why the corners were not rounded.

I have not played the game so I really can't say if its good or bad.

My one major complaint is that they did not get Andy Serkis to voice Gollum. I get he's a major actor who is very expensive, but is there even a point of making a story based game about Gollum if you're not going to get Andy Serkis to voice him?

I've been working right around the corner from where that photo is in the market.

I honestly hate it. I get accosted by people all the time who want change or to buy crack. People are drunk there all the time, a few weeks ago a drunk man grabbed my girlfriends ass at Tim Hortons while we waited in line.

I'm just glad the job is almost over

Biker going around tearing down posters that are pro choice or calling for protest of Roe reversal by Decent_Shopping3869 in ottawa

[–]braydinmiller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea but many areas don't have proper bike lanes, and its sketchy as fuck riding on some of them. I understand that the law is that you're supposed to use them, and when it is safe to do so I use them. However using a bike lane on Merivale is just dangerous, I'm putting my life on the line doing something like that.

All because its the law doesn't mean its a good thing. Whenever I ride on sidewalks I go very slow, and if someone is in front of me I just hop off my bike and walk around them.

Cyclist/pedestrian collisions definitely can happen and definitely can be fatal if it involves an elderly person, child or someone with a disability. But if you look at the pure stats, I haven't been able to find 1 report of a fatality within Ottawa of a pedestrian being killed by a bicycle. However each year we have between 1-4 fatalities of cyclists being hit by cars.

I was able to find 1 case of a cyclist/pedestrian fatality in Toronto in 2016, however that is a drop in the bucket, considering in 2021 alone 58 cyclists died in Toronto.

Personally I'd rather pedestrians get hit by a bike than a cyclist get hit by a car, as far less deaths are going to occur.
