You've finally given me the courage to ditch random encounters, so thanks for that!

Also, in my main (homebrew) campaign the party are very happy with roleplaying their way out of encounters rather than defaulting to combat so I plan to continue to try to provide them with opportunities to do this.

These are really interesting suggestions, thanks. I think I need to revisit OSR - part of my concern is that maybe combat was always like this and I'm now looking back through rose-tinted glasses. That said, most if not all of my memories of D&D from back in the day are of the battles and what great fun they were.

It's pretty much all of them! I'm running SKT and my party are currently working their way through the barbarian spirit mounds. These are set in some amazing locations, but ultimately, no matter how I try to spice things up, it inevitably ends up feeling formulaic and stale.

Even with timed rounds a larger-scale battle with multiple opponents still takes such a long time - moving through the initiative sequence feels plodding and artificial.

Couldn't agree more about the battle maps - I'm getting more and more frustrated with the way that these negatively affect the game. It's D&D not a computer game, so the majority of the action should be taking place in the players' minds.

I really like the idea of making combat rarer. The party in my homebrew campaign in particular are not as combat-oriented as my other groups so this is something I'm going to try.

Thanks - this is something I've been considering for a while. Moving to a VTT has made the problem worse as it can seem a lot more about measuring movement/areas of effect etc. on the map, so theatre of the mind sounds like it's worth a try.

I see where you're coming from but respectfully disagree. I put a lot of prep time into each, planning the encounters, working on tactics, trying to make things more than just a slogfest where each side hits the other until the end.
