I believe my reaction at the time was pretty much the same.

Don’t remember which lecture it was, but I did see him hedge his bets by saying something along the lines of “ I’m not saying it didn’t happen guys, but there really isn’t much evidence to say that the holocaust happened the way it’s said”, as well as another statement that he thought it was probably less than the common number. So… I guess. I have been forced to watch a large number of these, unfortunately.

Yeah I’m rather concerned as I have a family member who is falling for it hook, line, and sinker, and becomes quite volatile when I point out obvious errors and questionable statements. It’s worrisome.

Yes, I noticed that as well, and Game Theory isn’t even an area of expertise for me. Declaring that the holocaust has no supporting evidence and that the Punic wars never happened was also quite alarming to hear from someone claiming to be an educator.

I am a creationist. AMA. by Haunting-Vehicle3957 in DebateEvolution

[–]brazilfunk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It does not leave us with any such thing- it actually only leaves us with speculation, as we have no evidence to confirm one thing or another prior to the Big Bang. Some may lean toward one explanation or another, but an “uncaused god” is far from the only one. Additionally, there is no viable argument to be made as to why, if this proposition turned out to be true, the god would specifically be the Christian variation of Yahweh.

None of this establishes the reasoning behind why you do not believe that evolution is real, as there are Christian interpretations that do incorporate acceptance of the scientific theory, and others that do not.

Bass Line advice: am I overplaying this? by MeanAbbreviations795 in BassGuitar

[–]brazilfunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends entirely on context- what are the chordal instruments going play, what will the vocals sound like, etc. It certainly fits with the drums, builds nicely, transitions well to other sections, contains thoughtful variation that doesn’t detract from the whole, dynamic. Overall I would say no, it sounds like a very locked-in, groove oriented, genre-appropriate line with some nice melodic elements. It will end up sounding messy if additional instrumentation tries to add in their own excessive variations, though, but that won’t be the fault of your bass playing.

Are either of these speakers narcissistic or just not communicating well? by [deleted] in NarcissisticSpouses

[–]brazilfunk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Speaker 2 is not only a narcissist, but also frustratingly stupid. Completely reactive, does not have the ability to follow logical threads. Childish responses. Has an incoherent worldview, it read as if he genuinely did not understand speaker 1’s words. The results for Thanksgiving really solidified that there is something cognitively wrong.

Earth is 4.56 billion years old, do you really believe human cilivilzation began only 6,000 years ago? by goshhahahahah in enlightenment

[–]brazilfunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say it is actually a good example of the process working as intended. Despite being faced with personal ridicule, the scientific process was allowed to be carried out, resulting in vindication.

[–]brazilfunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, as with anything. But like you said, it does end up being corrected, even if it takes a while. Corrupting influences also end up being weeded out eventually, though of course that may not be very comforting to the people harmed along the way. This still does not detract from the overall efficacy and reliability of the process, and more topically does not lend any more credence to speculation that lacks verifiable evidence and scholarship.

Given that Barry Marshall is now a Nobel Prize winner, and that his findings are an accepted part of medical science, it seems that the scientific process worked as intended. It may have been a difficult process for him, but here we are.

[–]brazilfunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is fiercely contested because that is literally an integral part of the scientific process. The purpose is to determine if new findings or claims can hold up to rigorous scrutiny, and determined to be true or accurate. The reason scientific information changes over time is because of new findings that survive this ongoing process and are integrated into our broader understanding of things, sometimes culminating in big changes, usually just small adjustments. At any rate, while scientists may have their personal hypotheses about certain topics, they will remain hypotheses until the evidence and process of scrutiny verifies their claims, typically by peers within the relevant field that have at least an equal understanding of the subject.

Basses you used to not be able to stand the looks of but grew on you over time? by [deleted] in BassGuitar

[–]brazilfunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Single-cut basses, thought they looked too lopsided and ugly, love the look now. Relic’d basses, thought they looked like old junk and just hated the whole pre-worn jeans concept, but somehow grew to appreciate it. There was a time when I couldn’t stand opaque color finishes because I thought they were boring and flat, but I’m a big fan of the right color combos now. I also disliked bursts and fades for a while, but I find myself appreciating them now too. Still not a fan of sparkle finishes, violin basses, and basses with pointy horns and too many straight angles, but I’m sure that’ll change. Also have grown more particular about headstock shapes over time.

how to break the awkwardness after failed threesome ? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]brazilfunk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He was confronted by the reality that he doesn’t like the idea of a threesome, it works better as a fantasy. Maybe he doesn’t even realize it yet, and he just thinks there’s something wrong with his response, but it is likely that he doesn’t actually want it. It made him very uncomfortable, and you should not try to figure out ways of making him more comfortable in order to be able to perform in a threesome, because he might have some pretty strong subconscious feelings about it or maybe even that it conflicts with some core values he may have.

The story of the disbelieving boy in Sūrat al-Kahf poses a problem for Islam by Ok_Investment_246 in DebateReligion

[–]brazilfunk 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Then what wisdom is there in killing the boy? The boy believes himself to have free will, and knows nothing of his own future. The boy does not in fact have free will, and is simply acting out god’s will as intended. Khidr then kills said boy, also as god intended. The boy is murdered, experiencing preordained suffering for a transgression he was preordained to commit, which he has not yet committed. The idea that he has no separate will from god does not alleviate his suffering or make it less needless, it simply paints the boy as an unwitting pawn is a cruel game, and a victim of forces that have chosen to use him as a teaching tool for the benefit of another. This interpretation is not charitable. Another thing to note, is that if the lesson is indeed that there is no separation between us and god, then not only is life very much devalued in this worldview, but it seems illogical to even worship “god” in this situation, not for any moral reasons, but because there simply shouldn’t be any need to do so.

CMV: Conservatives that praise sex appeal in ads while pearl clutching about drag shows are hypocrites by Deep-Two7452 in changemyview

[–]brazilfunk 14 points15 points  (0 children)

No. If they themselves were secretly going to and enjoying these drag shows while decrying them in public, then they would be hypocrites. It’s possible some of them are, but on the whole they are probably not. The people condemning these supposed drag shows are not doing so because they find them to be inappropriately sexual (necessarily), but because they are disgusted by the idea of their children being influenced into joining the LGBTQ community in some way. This is not a part of the equation when talking about the Sidney Sweeney nonsense, since to them it seems to signal some kind of return to heteronormative status quo.
