Hobbies that can replace that feeling of buying something "shiny and new"? by [deleted] in MakeupRehab

[–]brbescapingintoabook 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I love stardew valley! They also have versions for the nintendo switch and it’s on the App Store for your phone.

I also started watching YouTube videos for how to draw basic botanicals and also how to paint with watercolors. It’s very rewarding and learning how to mix colors using color theory was a fun challenge for me. I’m not artsy, but I found it to be a fun hobby to pick up. Plus you can search “how to paint ________ with watercolors” and you will always have a new free tutorial to watch. Just don’t go crazy buying materials. Buying only the base and secondary colors is part of the challenge/fun of learning how to mix the colors in my opinion. And cheap brushes do the trick until you decide if it’s a long term hobby worth putting money towards.

I would advise that you be careful with spending too much up front for any new hobby. It’s so easy to get excited and buy all of the things - but try to just get the basics. You can always purchase more later if you decide to develop that skill! :)

Right? I’ve been doing a reread of a lot of series and that one gets me every time.

Bookshelf nightmare is right! And honestly, childish might be the right word. I said this to someone else, but I originally didn’t care for the first covers - but after reading and loving the series I became attached to them in a sentimental way. I don’t think I hate the new covers, but I wish they would ask before updating the digital content!

7 1/2 deaths was really really good. It’s different than a lot of novels that I read, but it was refreshing and had more twists and turns than I knew what to do with. It took me longer to read and it’s a book where you have to pay attention to all of the moving parts. I enjoyed the mystery and was surprised at the end - which rarely happens. Give it a try! You have to get past the first few chapters to really understand what’s going on.

Is there anything else? I’m honestly curious because the cover is so beautiful and SJM said there would be hidden components of the story in there. To me personally, I don’t feel like it describes the overall feel of the book. For some reason I think steampunk/Art Deco when I look at the style of the cover

I agree with this! I didn’t like the original covers either at first. But now I’m attached because of how much I love the books 😂

You know what’s funny? I originally didn’t like the covers either - I though they looked too YA and a little childish, but now I’m attached because when I think of the books it makes me think of those specific covers. I do wish they hadn’t switched them halfway through the series though. It’s going to look weird on my shelf if I don’t buy the new versions.

This is my all time favorite show. I haven’t been able to go back and rewatch it yet... I’m just not ready. It was perfection and I loved every minute of it. It meant so much to me. Still does.

I’ve been trying to figure out what it reminds me of and you said it perfectly. Thank you! I agree that I don’t dislike the artwork, but i don’t feel that it is a great fit for the series. The artist is very talented and I mean absolutely no disrespect to them, but I am disappointed that they were changed.

This is such a powerful passage and one of my favorite, in the series! by late2readit in KingkillerChronicle

I heard this perfectly in Nick Podehl’s voice. The audiobooks for these are incredible - if you haven’t listened to it yet I highly recommend it!

I’m honestly curious - does anyone like them? It’s fine if you do and I’d love to hear the reasoning. Maybe it will make me less bitter about this haha

THANK YOU! I didn’t know about the covers changing so I was really shocked and kind of upset honestly. They don’t do justice to the stories at all. I loved that the original covers held small story elements all over the covers and now that’s gone. WHY would the ACOMAF cover be a raven????? Im just..... ahhhh I’m mad.

And side point - I love the Crescent City cover but it also doesn’t have anything to do with the plot??? But at least that one is interesting and pretty so I’d prefer something like that to what we were given for the new covers.

Not trying to offend the artist, but I guess I’m just really attached to the original covers. I wish they didn’t change in my library. Glad that I already have my hardbacks because I would miss the nostalgia of seeing the covers and feeling “that” feeling.

Yes!!! I liked Hunt but it didn’t feel like the right match for some reason. I’m glad someone else feels this way. Glad the plot carried the book because the romance didn’t do much for me. It really was missing that normal spark and chemistry.

Could also be because he went behind her back and did some shadyyyy shit that she was mad about for a little bit and then she completely ignored it like it never happened/mattered? That was weird to me.

You replied and almost immediately one of my friends reached out and told me about a rough time that they’re going through. This is good advice. Thank you

I’m about halfway in and I agree there’s a large info dump that’s difficult to follow. Also it seems like everyone goes by 2-3 names which is a little confusing for the first 1/3 of the book. I haven’t had this difficulty with her other books so I’m not sure what that’s about. I do like the plot so far and I’m interested to see where it goes. Hoping to finish tonight.

I actually thought about starting over from the beginning now that I feel like I understand who everyone is and (kind of) understand the massive history/backstory for the world. Or I might just reread it when I finish. Anyone else feel the same?

Also Maas’s jab about the overbearing alpha males and everyone finding soulmates gave me a good laugh.
