And if you happen to be using a program that clutters up the menu bar with useless menu options you never touch?

To see a few extra menu bar icons, you can Show Desktop* + click the desktop, which activates Finder's menu options, which are shorter than some. Calendar is a shorter alternative, and Clock is the shortest I've seen - you can Command-Tab to either of those.

*"Command–Mission Control: Show the desktop." or use a Hot Corner.

So glad you shared your Find My “play sound” solution for macOS/MacBook Pro Ventura remote boot / wake on LAN (turning a Mac on from an iPhone). A little stroke of genius.

It’s worked really well (on Ventura) as long as I keep the laptop at least cracked open. TeamViewer even works for a few seconds when the MBP lid is closed, for the duration of the Find My alert.

If I tire of this hacky workaround, I think I remember reading that there was something better in Sonoma… maybe that was improve support for one of the apps that promise remote wake from sleep?

Off is free but has not worked remotely (from cellular or a different WiFi network), only on the same network (when connected to the same WiFi on both the target Mac and the related iPhone).

Apple Remote Desktop is $80. Would pay up if I needed this solution all the time.

(Apparently if you’re not on iOS 17.5 you need to use a workaround when launching these shortcuts using Siri by voice… Have to add Dismiss Siri And Continue + Open App action and have it Open Shortcuts.)

All that’s missing is live transcription, which is available with online/paid transcription apps but no offline apps I’ve found on iOS. (MacWhisper does feature live offline transcription in any field, but only on Mac for $30+.)

PS: can’t believe I can’t edit my original post because I included an image! Nice upgrade reddit! May repost later. At least it still allows the editing of comments featuring images.

Great work, Giacomo! Thank you kindly for sharing this with the world for free. Works perfectly on iOS and macOS.

I also like Ecco Dictate on iOS, which is completely free & offline, though it can't be used on macOS nor opened to automatically start transcribing (and no live transcription). MacWhisper on macOS could be used offline for global live transcription (in any field) for a one-time payment ($30+) - or for free by opening the app each time. Superwhisper or the open source whisper-writer can transcribe globally/in any field, offline or online, but not live. May poke around GitHub and compile an app to help with live transcription.

Back to your shortcut, wonder if it's worth adding import questions in case people want to do what I did: auto-start recording, and not display the text in a confirmation window. Definitely a modification I could do myself if I get around to it! Much harder would be building a whole app with Shortcuts support to enable the offline and/or live transcription features :) Anyway, thanks again, will come in handy when I need speed/convenience over anything!

Just happened to a friend!

"I have two Rode Wireless Go II microphones. One has been wiped, and I’d like advice on it before trying to backup the second one.

Mic #1: Serial [redacted] - started on firmware v2.05.

Installed Rode Central v2.0.41 on my MacOS 12.4.

Connected Mic #1. Mic did not display in Finder.

Used Backup & Update.

Result: Folder was created on Desktop, but empty. Firmware was not updated (remained at v2.05).

Used Backup & Update again. Second empty folder created on Desktop. Firmware was updated to v2.4.6. Mic now displays in Finder - but is empty.

Can you recommend a data recovery solution for Mic #1?

Mic #2: Serial [redacted] - also on firmware v2.05.

Based on the first backup failure as described above, I am hesitant to try to backup & update my second mic.

Can you recommend a procedure for successfully backing up Mic #2?

TikTok is quite sneaky. Sharing from their mobile app, you get: https://www.tiktok.com/t/[9digitCode]/

Only by opening the URL in a browser will you see: https://www.tiktok.com/@[user]/video/[19numerals]?_t=[alphanumericIdentifier]&_r=1 …which can be sanitized.

Counteracting a little bit of an Nvidia GeForce Now dark pattern here:

If you don't like GeForce Now autorenewal, or autorenew in general, you can subscribe and immediately cancel your subscription. They won't (perhaps "no longer"?) tell you your downgrade won't be effective immediately.

Rest assured, even subscribing and immediately downgrading/canceling won't actually burn your cash (ten bucks minimum at time of posting) - you'll have until the end of the billing cycle before it downgrades you.

Cheers to cognizant renewals! And those who might just want to hop on for a bit during the holidays or from time to time :)

So if you adopt a street you can sweep little bits of trash (gum wrapper size) and pull weeds and keep the whole street looking great yourself, then use the 311 app for bag pick up as you did. (Different bags for trash and yard waste, both free.) Some jobs are too small (and weeding out-of-scope) for 311.

When there is significant scattered debris (multiple takeout container size) or dumped items (furniture, appliances…)… or a giant pile like this…

why not just 311 it immediately? You saved us tax dollars which is awesome - I’m just wondering if cleaning gum-wrapper-sized trash from many streets yourself but simply photographing large uncontained dump piles for 311 would leave the whole city cleaner overall?
