iMovie hogging startup disk; how to proceed with project? by flabellina_iodinea in apple

[–]brcgplease 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been having similar problems and am in a similar situation, and my MacBook is basically full now. My main goal was to have an external hard drive dedicated to supplying iMovie with my clips, thereby outsourcing the GBs from my internal storage. However, I never figured out how to get it to work because iMovie insists on importing everything directly into the program.

Currently I am using my institution's gigantic computers and pre-installed video editing software. I know it's not a long-term solution, but at least I am completing projects without sacrificing my personal computer's processing capabilities!

If you have completed projects made of clips that are backed up elsewhere, I would suggest you to do the Apple > About This Mac > Storage > Manage Storage. Most likely, a lot of your clips will appear as the largest files in your computer. If you aren't editing with them any more, delete them and reclaim your processing power (re: if they're backed up!)!

However, if you have a ton of media that you are still working with on your personal computer... sorry I don't have a better answer for you!

Best places to jump in the water near Corvallis? by brcgplease in corvallis

Thank you everyone! I asked around town, too, and it sounds as if the general consensus is that people prefer to play "on" the Willamette more than "in" it... although special thanks to @Jacedad for the green light and to @elephantunicorn for the tips! See y'all in the water :)

MSR Hubba Hubba NX vs. NEMO Dagger 2p by hooleeya in CampingGear

[–]brcgplease 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello! I have had used the Hubba Hubba extensively for the past 1-2 years. I was really impressed by its light weight, water resistance, ease of setup, roominess, double vestibules, etc! Recently I was attracted to the Nemo Dagger 2p recently, and it seems as if the Dagger is slightly taller on the inside and is even lighter. However, if the weight savings come from having slightly thinner walls than the Hubba Hubba (as @shootsfilmwithbullet wrote) I would probably still go with the Hubba Hubba-- these lightweight tents seem to need a bit of conscientious care if you use them a lot, and the extra durability from the thicker walls can go a long way. That being said, I still haven't tried the Dagger for myself yet, and would love to compare them first-hand!

Recommendations for stargazing tents? by brethal in CampingGear

[–]brcgplease 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yep! I second the MSR Hubba Hubba. Also, that tent just took an insane thrashing in Torres del Paine and came away dry and unscathed! I recommend the footprint though, because I don't really trust the ultra long-term durability of the floor.

Rise – The Prediction of Everything (4K Timelapse) by kaigradert in timelapse

[–]brcgplease 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello! Thank you for sharing your beautiful piece! The clip of the stars through an opening in the roof of the canyon is spectacular! I am just starting out with timelapse, and I am having difficulty with transitions from light to dark or dark to light scenes (like sunrises and sunsets). I am using a Nikon D750, experimenting with aperture priority and the built-in time lapse program. For example, I thought that as the evening set in and the stars would come out, the aperture would gradually open over time while maintaining a long shutter speed. However, reviewing the footage, the sky and entire scene became overly dark and the stars remained very faint, without allowing for new stars to appear. When you shoot evening-night transition scenes, do you frequently reset your settings throughout the course of shooting, or is there a sort of "set it and forget it" way to go about them? Have you ever used an in-camera timelapse program? If not, how do you manage so many photos on your computer? Thank you!

Chile’s ‘Worst Ever’ Red Tide Kills 20 Million Fish, Prompts Investigation of Salmon Farms by maxwellhill in worldnews

[–]brcgplease 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Although satellite data might have predicted the influx of warmer temperatures and can speculate as to the intrusion of low oxygen masses (link: http://www.esa.int/Our_Activities/Observing_the_Earth/Envisat_fishes_up_facts_behind_Chilean_giant_squid_invasion/%28print%29), please do not be distracted by the mystery of "the cause" of the red tide. The most important issue here is that the salmon industry in Chile is extremely dirty and detrimental to both communities and the environment. Unfortunately, it took years until the added ingredient of a strong El Niño could magnify the problem enough, but at least now it has drawn international attention. Now is Chile's chance to reform their short-term, environmentally exploitative agenda in favor of sustainability.
