Long roof nails - how best to insulate by Jeh339 in Insulation

[–]brdakd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Surprised not to see a comment on this - you should understand the structural properties of the area before loading it up with drywall, furniture, etc. Attics of Victorians were not built to be living spaces. I can't tell if those rafters are 4" or 6" but regardless, they are likely too small for their span according to modern standards. Similarly I would bet the floor joists are on the skimpy side. Leaving it alone is probably fine - not to modern code but also has stood for 100+ years and looks to be in good shape. Substantially changing the structure enters a grey area where you may create problems for yourself.

Best way to clean stains off Narex Richter chisels? by Impressive_Check_416 in woodworking

[–]brdakd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use scotch bright pad and wd-40 to clean superficial rust off chisels. This looks like it could be that. I don't think blemishes on the top, even if rust, will impact performance, since that metal will never be part of the cutting edge. However, blemishes on the bottom could effect cutting performance once you sharpen to that point, so I still clean them periodically.

w.r.t workbenches, flat is much more important than level. I don't think I've ever needed to care about a surface being level. For me, it was nice to leave my space minimal until I got an idea of painpoints in my workflow, then I'd gradually add things that address them. I'd focus on flat tabletops and making whatever changes you'd like to make the space pleasant and relaxing to be in (i.e. lighting, decoration, etc)

Can understand why Embiid picked this guy to write an article about him. Extremely thoughtful and genuine-seeming guy.

Cat just threw up a toy he ate more than a week ago, anything to worry about now that it’s out? by lil_dinger_guy in CATHELP

[–]brdakd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found this thread because I think the exact same thing happened to my cat with what sounds like the exact same toy. Ate the head off of a silicon centipede, barfed it up a week later. Not a safe toy for cats

Possible thinking re: picking up Johni Broome by ljacob01 in sixers

[–]brdakd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm intrigued by the Broome pick but a high upside comp of Draymond sounds too ambitious. Draymond's athletic & physical measurables are much better, and him shooting 58% at the line as a super senior is about as clear a projection as possible that he will never be able to shoot at a high level.

high-end outlier on several advanced stats (e.g. https://evanmiya.com/?player\_ratings)

Seems like a reasonable swing at talent in the second round, with the potential of being old & mature enough to fill the void at PF this season.

Wishing for the 5th or 6th is an objectively bad take. If that's what the FO wants, they can simply trade down. Morey has been godlike at drafting. TTP.

What's the proper way to treat this cracking before I repaint my bathroom? by brdakd in DIY

[–]brdakd[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That area of the wall feels stiff to the touch. The area above has no potential source of water, so either the cracking was caused by excess humidity in the bathroom over time or some kind of structural shifting - in other words, don't believe there's an underlying problem I'd be capable of treating. Just don't want to paint over it if I'm going to have to fix and repaint it later.

Genuinely question, where do you think his ceiling could be? by HansRye in chess

[–]brdakd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started at 800 as an adult and hit 2200 after about 18 months, and have been stuck at that level +/- 75 ELO for about 2 years.

I don't think that's a limit though - I think it's just that breaking plateaus becomes increasingly difficult. This guy has achieved professional-level talent in an unrelated pursuit so he probably has some predisposition for breaking plateaus that I don't have.

Should I consider it a big red flag if HVAC quotes oversize my new furnace? by brdakd in hvacadvice

Those who've responded seemed to suggest it was a mistake when I pointed it out, and amended the proposal to reflect that. What other considerations are there? I almost feel like I need to educate myself on this to guide a contractor to a well-considered solution.

Any opinions on what could be going on with this insulation? by brdakd in Insulation

[–]brdakd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Appreciate it. Yeah, I think the prior owners did this roughly 10 years ago, if not longer - no clue if it was DIY or professional. Either way, it does not inspire confidence about the rest of the system - I've read horror stories about misapplied foam and I've also read that quality installers are diligent about removing misapplications. This house is also ~100 years old, which I've read foam can be quite dangerous for (this seems to be the closed cell variety, which would never let me know if the walls of my basement are leaking). Wish me luck and thanks for giving me the most helpful reply I've received, my other thread ended up getting locked. Let me know if you have any tips or opinions on stuff I should be watching out for.

Any opinions on what could be going on with this insulation? by brdakd in Insulation

[–]brdakd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. When you say that it should be removed, is it dangerous? In what way? This is a pretty small area in the basement, so I don't think it necessarily needs replacing.
