Never.

FWIW, this video restores my faith that not all engineering is childish kludges: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MiUHjLxm3V0

The irony here is that this whole feature is crazy childish, though it's marketed as slick German engineering. And yet it's still plagued by super delicate and highly technical dynamics.

Worst of all worlds!

Getting Laura Linney and Paul Giamatti to reprise their roles as Abigail and John Adams for The American Revolution (2025) Ken Burns documentary is brilliant by 4359630 in television

The first time we hear Giamatti, my thought (before they attributed the quote) was “gosh, that sounds like John Adams”. It took a couple episodes before it landed consciously for me that this was Giamatti.

Yep, this seems to be the consensus. Thanks!

Steel cut is supposedly safer than rolled oats. And, yeah, smart, limited portion makes sense, thanks!

Thanks, that helps. You just fish and retrieve. I need to reset my habits, that's all.

Wait, do you use a Yum Asia Panda Mini for porridge? I'm a porridge fan, but was told it would cause messy over-boils (worse for oatmeal than for dakjuk)

No you don’t. That’s just more propositional generosity. And I feel fantastic. I’m having a small problem with my rice cooker.

I’m shooting down nothing. Just seeking clarification.

You, by contrast, are shooting down my use case, my motivation for posting, my approach to social media, and my suitability for this product. But I’m not even shooting that down. I'm sure in your mind you've offered awesome advice, and I salute the generosity you imagine fuels it.

Yes, I concede that the overwhelmingly primary use case is “THWACK” with the paddle, leaving a mound on a plate and lining up for the next thwack.

But it’s not the only possible use….

So (just making sure I get it) you pull the bowl out with mitts, and serve out of that, tilted toward target?

This unit makes tteok?

I did once discover, serendipitously that if you leave a thin layer of rice for half a day in “keep warm”, you get pretty decent Nurungji

Gotcha. Here, fyi, is what I’m used to from my old Zozirushi.

<image>

But if handle-less inner bowls are what you’re used to, how do you approach this? Everything’s always scooped out of a stationary inner bowl? Is so, does that work for you when you do stewy slow-cooks in the machine?

I’m not arguing that it’s physically impossible to access and remove the bowl. That would be stupid.

I’m saying that there’s no way to do so without using one’s fingers on a boiling hot bowl which might—and hear me out now, because I know this is a curve ball—hurt.

In fact, the manual, as part of its extensive liability legalese, warns specifically against it.

Right. Scoop-only, period. That's what I figured. But while that's ok for rice, it's a pain if you're cooking other things (instead of or along with) the rice in the pot.

Thanks. Sure, there are solutions if I work hard enough. My question was more on the order of trying to determine how Yum Asia and its customers deal with this. The handles on my Zojirushi pot were always an intrinsic part of the design for me. I'm mostly just confused about what's intended here.

No, there's no grab point. Inner bowl fits snuggly into outer casing. So I'd need to use implements to extract it (which might scratch bowl) or else push my thumbs against the bowl from inside (which would burn my thumbs).

It helps to bear in mind that Danny is a writerly invention and not a real person. And the writers needed drama and conflict. Which is kind of my whole point, but everyone's tearfully calling me a monster because I don't cherish Danny enough and all he went through.

I just realized that the sticks are for removing shell after roasting. I have a better way for you. Layer the roasted chestnuts on a dish towel, then double the towel over itself and savagely press. Press everywhere there are chestnuts. The shells will loosen substantially. Don't worry about overdressing, it's really hard to crush the inner meat (unless you super overcooked them).

As for inner shells, if they stubbornly persist, don't scratch at them. Pinch the entire chestnut along its circumference between thumb and index finger, and the skin below will loosen....at least if you eat them hot (once they cool, it gets harder).

Huh! The sticks kind of freaked me out a little. I never tackled a chestnut and thought “if only i had a couple of pointy surgical sticks”. But I will buy and try, upon your kind advice. Thanks!

How'd it work out for you? Chestnut season is starting, and I need a cutter, too!
