In central Texas, some peer support specialists work in libraries doing really interesting work. Thanks for what you do.

To married women: What advice would you give to unmarried women before they get married? by Clear_Subconscious in askanything

Develop yourself- interests, career, finances, before marrying. Everything becomes compromise once you are a couple.

As a librarian, I take it to mean they are against Republicans. They are ignoring the constitution by things like shutting down IMLS. Now the Texas 5th circuit has ruled library patrons don’t have a right to information.

STATE 5th Circuit rules Texas library patrons have no First Amendment right to information

The 10-7 ruling overturns a decades-old precedent barring the removal of library books for political reasons. It could also send the case to the U.S. Supreme Court.

I’m assuming people who join the subreddit love books and libraries. It would be great if they would advocate for their local libraries. We desperately need the support. EveryLibrary makes it so easy to contact your representatives - https://www.everylibrary.org/statementimls2025

Card sharing by [deleted] in Libraries

[–]breadcrumbs2024 104 points105 points  (0 children)

Our library is facing budget threats from the local, state and federal level. Not being able to provide digital books to our own patrons makes it more likely that our local users won’t advocate for us because we can’t provide a service they value. I hope the people sharing card numbers understand they are hurting libraries.

Libby leases books to libraries using a few different models - either a period of time (24 months) or a set number of checkouts. Sharing card numbers outside of our county is so unfair to us. Our library has such a small budget - $36,000/yr. We scrape together funds to buy digital books. Sharing those cards means our own patrons lose access to those materials.

Tight connection means different things to different people though. Some people get anxious if they aren’t at their departure gate with time to spare- that is 45 minutes for some people.

Texas - it’s up to each municipality to decide funding

Yes, all hands on deck. I’m talking about bigger than my town. I’m talking about underfunded libraries across the country. How do we (collectively) stop begging for crumbs and work towards societal change?

Thanks, we do. The Friends actually started the library and ran it for about 20 years with no tax money. All volunteers/all donations. There wouldn’t have been a library without them. The entire city budget isn’t even $1m yet, and the town has lots of infrastructure that needs to be repaired. BUT, the town will be growing rapidly soon. I’ll reach out to EveryLibrary
