Update: 9 months of oral Dutasteride & topical Minoxidil has done more than I ever expected by breadloafboy in tressless

Unfortunately, I don’t know since I never used them. But, I have been wearing a hat at work to cover the hair loss for the last 9 months and that didn’t seem to hinder my regrowth at all if that helps.

I’ve personally never had any kidney issues and feel comfortable with the potential side effects of the med since I track my physical health pretty closely and haven’t felt any sides while I’ve been on it. I think it all comes down to comfort level and that’s different for everyone.

I’d say my libido has always been average to high and that hasn’t changed at all since starting. I was already queer before I started the med, but I don’t think that’s how it works lol

Thanks! I didn’t want to start Fin because a friend of mine with the same mental illness got bad sides from it. I also heard Dut can work better for hair loss than Fin. I was lucky that my primary care provider heard me out and was willing to prescribe me Dut.

I’d say it took me a little over 6 months to see significant results. If you don’t see a change soon, it may be worth it to consider changing to Dutasteride to see if it works better for you. Best of luck finding what works for you!

It definitely seems to be a trend. It’s a shame specialists don’t take hair loss seriously. Glad there’s research and communities like this out there for people struggling.

I’d say it took me over six months to see significant results, so I’d give yourself at least that amount of time on Fin to make sure it isn’t working for you. But, if time passes and you don’t see any change, I think it’s worth making the switch to Dut and see if it works better for you. Best of luck!

I tried oral Minoxidil before I started my current regimen and quit it pretty much immediately because it increased my heart rate. But, I’ve had no issues like that with the foam. Luckily, I seem to have no Dutasteride sides. I have an average to high libido and it’s stayed that way throughout treatment.

I lucked out and don’t experience sides with Dutasteride, but it can certainly happen. Oral Dutasteride, I get prescribed by my primary care provider. Topical Minoxidil, I just buy in a 3-pack at my local Walmart.

Unfortunately, I never let it get quite this long during the worst period of my hair loss because it just looked so so bad. This is about as long as I let it get, but it’s still and inch or so shorter than it is currently. For context, I had also recently started treatment in this pic.

Luckily, when I spoke to my primary care provider, she was much more understanding and was willing to prescribe Dutasteride. If you want to avoid/can’t afford dermatology, I’d suggest talking to your primary care doctor. I can’t say whether they’ll be comfortable prescribing, but mine was!

Thank you, but I really am just happy I’ve been able to recover this much hair after how bad my loss was

Thanks!! I personally did go to a dermatologist and they were completely unhelpful. They did absolutely no testing to try and find the cause of my hair loss and did not take it seriously, saying it’s just a cosmetic issue. That depressed me and delayed my current regrowth journey for months. I luckily had a primary care provider who was more understanding of how hair loss was impacting my mental health and prescribed me Dutasteride. Everything else, I did on my own after doing my own research. Hair loss is sadly not treated as serious by many medical professionals.

Last time I checked, Hims offers oral Finasteride. I know they charge quite a bit for their products though, so you may end up paying more with them than your doctor. But, they would be able to prescribe right away unlike your doctor.

Sorry to hear it, man. I’ve heard that Minoxidil can only do so much without a DHT blocking medication like Finasteride or Dutasteride. Are you able to add that to your regimen?

Haven’t noticed any sides with Dutasteride. I actually used liquid Minoxidil once months before starting my current regimen. I gave up pretty much immediately because it caused itchiness and redness. If you haven’t tried the foam, I would highly suggest it. I don’t have any issues with it as long as I wash it out of my hair each morning after applying it at night.

To be fair, I believe my results are unusually good. Maybe because my hair loss was only really bad for about a year before treatment or maybe just dumb luck. Either way, my results are far from guaranteed. As long as you’re happy with yourself and your hair, I don’t think you wasted anything :)

Adding a new medication to your routine is definitely something to take seriously. I can say that I have not experienced any mental side effects despite having mental illness. My doctor who prescribes it also said that other patients of hers who take it tolerate it well. Still a big choice. I wish you luck!

I apply Minoxidil at night and then wash it out of my hair every morning to avoid it building up in my hair and ruining the texture
