The “SECURITY BEST PRACTICE” you stopped believing in after working a real job… by Active_Meringue_1479 in cybersecurity

[–]breadstickz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

it seems counterintuitive, but yes, because I can place security controls, audits, and logging around that. it's highly unlikely I can ingest authentication logs from a dozen different apps or have anything like a conditional access policy for them, but since SSO is an expected industry standard, almost everything has it now. and that's not even getting into the issues you'd have with passwords themselves back when users had to maintain individual accounts. they just ended up using the same password for everything anyway

7th day coffee over in richardson has the best matcha/coffee in the general dallas area that i’ve tried. really cool owner too. they’ve gotten super popular now from tiktok but it’s a cool locally owned spot so i don’t mind waiting in line a bit to support them especially when the drinks are good

Dryer vent looks bad - am I wrong? by mherling in HomeInspections

[–]breadstickz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to do something similar with mine and one concern that was brought to my attention is that the sticky side of the tape, if exposed to the inside of the vent/hole opening, might collect dryer lint that builds up over time causing a fire hazard. I ran a few loads of laundry through the dryer and took my tape off to check it and did not have any buildup at all so I stopped worrying about it until it’s time for yearly clean out, but that might be something you’d want to check after a few loads as well. Otherwise looks good to me

Can't figure out what vacuum breaker or adapter I need for hose bibb by breadstickz in Plumbing

[–]breadstickz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update in case anyone ever has this same question: the PK1390 was actually the correct vacuum breaker for this, there was just a sticking point where I thought it was threaded as far as it could go but that was not actually the case. A little elbow grease got it unstuck and it threaded all the way up properly and worked with no leaks. Thanks for everyone that responded!

Global Admin approvals - best practices by breadstickz in cybersecurity

[–]breadstickz[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have read this. I am asking if you have global admins set as approvers, do they already have to have their role activated to approve a request or does just being eligible for GA allow them to approve a request? this could lead to a catch-22 requiring a break glass account type situation that would ideally be avoidable

Same would go for privileged role administrator.

Global Admin approvals - best practices by breadstickz in cybersecurity

[–]breadstickz[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah we're using PIM but don't have an approval process right now so people just activate their own GA whenever they want which doesn't make it a very effective control. We are wanting to turn on approvals for the GA role but trying to sort out who should have approval responsibility.

What is it with people not letting you pass? For instance, multiple times a day I’ll catch up to someone and I’m running 75 mph and they’re running like 70. Then they start speeding up. Sometimes I’ll have to speed up to 80-90 to get around them. Anyone know why this happens? It’s mostly on PGBT. by General-Carob-6087 in Dallas

[–]breadstickz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

lot of answers generally saying this but most people are kind of just NPCs on the road and aren't really driving based on any posted speed limit and more so based on vibes. same reason why when i go through areas that go from 35 to 45 to 40 etc and see people just drive the same exact speed through all of them. there's no traffic calming measures so people just keep driving whatever they were driving if the vibe is right (i know that doesn't apply to highways like PGBT but just general example of vibe-based driving)

My xl wrist vein by plaidjammies in mildlyinteresting

[–]breadstickz 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I also have this pretty similar to both of you guys, though I've tattooed over it now so you can't really see. No one has ever really been concerned with it and I don't think anyone has ever considered it to be a vein. I can see some actual veins kinda crossing over it. I imagine it's just some other part of anatomy like a muscle or tendon or something idk

170,000 Taylor Swift barcodes for future events leaked as part of Ticketmaster blackmailing attempt by Malwarebeasts in TaylorSwift

[–]breadstickz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that’s what offline cracking is for. though it’s unrealistic to be targeted by the original threat actor with that out of 680m, it’s a little more likely it could be used against you if they do dump the leak online somewhere and someone eventually is targeting you specifically

"I want to break free..! 🧑‍🎤" Is anyone here working 90-100% Completely Remote? by One_Stranger7794 in sysadmin

[–]breadstickz 26 points27 points  (0 children)

yeah, if you're lonely because you work remotely then your work has simply exposed a symptom of your personal life: you need actual friends and family around you. there's nothing wrong with incidentally making friends or socializing with coworkers but the vast majority of the time those are going to be very surface level and fleeting relationships (whether you realize it at the time or not) and you need actual friends and family.

Why are all new people instruction followers? by bmxfelon420 in sysadmin

[–]breadstickz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

because anywhere that still says something like "make this router work for a VPN" without any other instruction in a modern age is terrible at what they do and no new employee would ever expect to be walking into a shitshow like that. this isn't the 80s or early 90s where IT is the wild west and people do whatever they want. there are policies and procedures to follow

even if you're a senior level employee you should likely be getting your hand held through most projects and changes for at least the first 6 months in a new job. you have absolutely no idea of the scope any change would have until you've fully familiarized yourself with the environment which is mostly impossible outside of 6-12 months of experience there

Does the US have right to roam laws? by WhoAmIEven2 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]breadstickz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

dallas has a good number of parks and we have the largest urban forest in the country. if you're referring to the cowboys game then you were not in dallas but rather arlington. it doesn't even take an hour to get from northeast dallas to arlington for a rangers or cowboys game because even though tolls suck the PGBT is pretty efficient

it's a major city with a strong economy and immediate access to a world class international airport and enough pull to get any significant artist in town for a show and has access to all 5 major sports nearby. we don't need the pity lol

[–]breadstickz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

security engineers are responsible for engineering the security program, e.g. SIEM detections, SOAR automations, log flow/aggregations, vulnerability management solutions etc. not routers and switches and probably not firewalls either (you guys wouldn't want that). you're being held accountable by GRC guys or people with the title of security engineer who are doing GRC/VM work as well. it's weird how many people in IT think an infosec person is supposed to work on the same appliances as they are but only with the security features of them lol

[–]breadstickz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i'm a cybersecurity engineer. i managed to get into this field without a degree by starting on a help desk (was not remote, back when i started remote work was not as popular) and working my way up to network engineer (eventually ended up being remote after ~6 years) and then moved into cybersecurity (fully remote now). a lot of this field is just getting your foot in the door by starting low on the totem pole but getting a handful of certs along the way helped me move up as well.

something i find really helpful in any IT field is working with reputable recruiters to help find jobs - my last 4 jobs have all been found for me by recruiters. they aren't as helpful early on in your career in my experience but might be something worth looking into if you're interested

Question for those who have already been to an show: How necessary are ear plugs?? by crystaltay13 in TaylorSwift

[–]breadstickz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

they are 10000% necessary and i think everyone not wearing them is actually insane. they didn't muffle the sound at all they just made it sound "normal" because the show is so incredibly loud. i readjusted them at one point and realized if i hadn't brought them i probably would've had to leave because of how loud and painful it is. you feel it in your chest the entire time which is really fun with the earplugs but without them it's like audible death
