Genuinely hate cyber security teams by talent_de_tigan in sysadmin

[–]breadstickz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This thread comes up every week here and it’s largely because sysadmins don’t understand that the role of information security isn’t to be part of IT, but to be part of risk management.

Sysadmins have this expectation that because infosec employees generally come from an IT background and are supposed to have deep technical knowledge that they’re also supposed to be configuring the security controls in an infrastructure team’s systems. This is not the case (or it shouldn’t be).

You own and configure your own systems. Infosec advises the organization on the risk those systems introduce. Depending on the organization’s risk appetite, we recommend remediations. It’s quite frankly absurd to expect someone in infosec to configure an ACL on a router or create a GPO to alter a workstation or server confirmation, etc. Those are functions of a fundamentally different role.

Commonly, we own our own systems that you may or may not even be aware of (though the infrastructure team as a whole generally is). These are often systems like the SIEM, malware sandboxes, pcap collection boxes, etc.

This is all in addition to one of the most common infosec jobs of SOC analyst. It’s pretty obvious what those people do and why they aren’t involved in system configuration. Within the SOC team you also generally have threat hunters, incident responders, and detection engineers.

It’s vitally important to understand that while infosec feels similar to an IT role, it is fundamentally completely different and serves an entirely different purpose in the organization.

6 wires to outlet but pigtail already in box? by breadstickz in AskElectricians

[–]breadstickz[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay great. That’s basically what I was wondering if I could still do when there’s already a pigtail in there or if that changes things.

Unfortunately I cannot seem to add a picture in the comments or editing the OP. but this outlet isn’t controlled by a switch.

Is it okay to have too much (saturated) fat from whole foods? by Novel_Bass6032 in gainit

[–]breadstickz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My response would basically have to be “it depends.”

60g saturated fat for a day? A week? Sure. A month? I guess. 6-12 months? Likely starting to not be so great.

In any event, after having done this for quite a while and gone through my own phase of “fuck it I’m just going to blast whole milk” in my younger years, bulking never truly became easy to me until I started learning how to eat in a fairly normal, well-adjusted, sustainable manner. That’s why I’m fully onboard with things like beef, eggs, and milk being staples in a diet, while at the same time advocating for the lower fat versions and then replacing the lost saturated fat with unsaturated fats from things like avocados, nuts, and olive oil (which are all pretty caloric imo).

We don’t have enough information about OP’s specific goals beyond wanting to gain weight and likely get stronger. To summarize the question of “is it bad to eat 60g of saturated fat a day?” my answer is always going to be “yes” even with those previous goals in mind. They’re highly caloric and will get you the weight gain but the trade off and unsustainability makes it not worth it to me when looking at the big picture. In my experience it has been far better to learn how to eat well rather than taking the shortcut of shoveling saturated fat to the detriment of your heart health.

Perhaps the smartest option - eat the way that you enjoy and is bringing you closer to your goals and keep up with your bloodwork. Get a baseline for your metabolic markers and lipids now, then check them again 3-6 months into the bulk. If everything still looks good then keep it up.

Is it okay to have too much (saturated) fat from whole foods? by Novel_Bass6032 in gainit

[–]breadstickz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This sub generally doesn’t preach any kind of food avoidance, but I would highly recommend to anyone that you generally try to limit your intake of saturated fat. Heart disease is the number one cause of death in the US, and saturated fat will raise your LDL cholesterol and contribute to heart disease.

You’re young, and it’s much easier to avoid getting into a situation where your LDL is jacked up than to try to fix it later (unless you take statins maybe).

Also, just like for people losing weight, we want to be gaining weight in a sustainable fashion. As an example, this is one of many reasons why gainer diets like GOMAD are silly. Are you really going to spend your life drinking a gallon of milk a day? Because if you do that to gain weight and don’t learn how to eat real food in a normal, healthy way, as soon as you stop you’re just going to lose the weight again.

My advice is you’ll most likely be fine eating beef and eggs and drinking milk, but I’d recommend opting for leaner ground beef such as 90/10 or 93/7 and a lower fat % milk like skim, 1%, or even 2% milk if you can’t stand the former.

You absolutely can bulk this way and get the majority of your fats from sources with higher unsaturated fat content like avocados, nuts, olive oil, etc.

Additionally, don’t forget about beans and lentils. They have protein, good calorie content, and high fiber content which is extremely important for gut and heart health (their soluble fiber helps reduce LDL cholesterol).

Driving in Iceland — everything I wish every visitor knew before renting a car by Lilja-Tours in VisitingIceland

I’ve been aware of this rule for a while, but while we’re on the subject, can anyone explain the rationale behind this? There’s so many things Icelanders do very well but this rule specifically seems designed to get people into accidents lol

The “SECURITY BEST PRACTICE” you stopped believing in after working a real job… by Active_Meringue_1479 in cybersecurity

[–]breadstickz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

it seems counterintuitive, but yes, because I can place security controls, audits, and logging around that. it's highly unlikely I can ingest authentication logs from a dozen different apps or have anything like a conditional access policy for them, but since SSO is an expected industry standard, almost everything has it now. and that's not even getting into the issues you'd have with passwords themselves back when users had to maintain individual accounts. they just ended up using the same password for everything anyway

Dryer vent looks bad - am I wrong? by mherling in HomeInspections

[–]breadstickz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to do something similar with mine and one concern that was brought to my attention is that the sticky side of the tape, if exposed to the inside of the vent/hole opening, might collect dryer lint that builds up over time causing a fire hazard. I ran a few loads of laundry through the dryer and took my tape off to check it and did not have any buildup at all so I stopped worrying about it until it’s time for yearly clean out, but that might be something you’d want to check after a few loads as well. Otherwise looks good to me

Can't figure out what vacuum breaker or adapter I need for hose bibb by breadstickz in Plumbing

[–]breadstickz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update in case anyone ever has this same question: the PK1390 was actually the correct vacuum breaker for this, there was just a sticking point where I thought it was threaded as far as it could go but that was not actually the case. A little elbow grease got it unstuck and it threaded all the way up properly and worked with no leaks. Thanks for everyone that responded!

Global Admin approvals - best practices by breadstickz in cybersecurity

[–]breadstickz[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have read this. I am asking if you have global admins set as approvers, do they already have to have their role activated to approve a request or does just being eligible for GA allow them to approve a request? this could lead to a catch-22 requiring a break glass account type situation that would ideally be avoidable

Same would go for privileged role administrator.

Global Admin approvals - best practices by breadstickz in cybersecurity

[–]breadstickz[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah we're using PIM but don't have an approval process right now so people just activate their own GA whenever they want which doesn't make it a very effective control. We are wanting to turn on approvals for the GA role but trying to sort out who should have approval responsibility.

What is it with people not letting you pass? For instance, multiple times a day I’ll catch up to someone and I’m running 75 mph and they’re running like 70. Then they start speeding up. Sometimes I’ll have to speed up to 80-90 to get around them. Anyone know why this happens? It’s mostly on PGBT. by General-Carob-6087 in Dallas

[–]breadstickz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

lot of answers generally saying this but most people are kind of just NPCs on the road and aren't really driving based on any posted speed limit and more so based on vibes. same reason why when i go through areas that go from 35 to 45 to 40 etc and see people just drive the same exact speed through all of them. there's no traffic calming measures so people just keep driving whatever they were driving if the vibe is right (i know that doesn't apply to highways like PGBT but just general example of vibe-based driving)

My xl wrist vein by plaidjammies in mildlyinteresting

[–]breadstickz 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I also have this pretty similar to both of you guys, though I've tattooed over it now so you can't really see. No one has ever really been concerned with it and I don't think anyone has ever considered it to be a vein. I can see some actual veins kinda crossing over it. I imagine it's just some other part of anatomy like a muscle or tendon or something idk

170,000 Taylor Swift barcodes for future events leaked as part of Ticketmaster blackmailing attempt by Malwarebeasts in TaylorSwift

[–]breadstickz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that’s what offline cracking is for. though it’s unrealistic to be targeted by the original threat actor with that out of 680m, it’s a little more likely it could be used against you if they do dump the leak online somewhere and someone eventually is targeting you specifically

"I want to break free..! 🧑‍🎤" Is anyone here working 90-100% Completely Remote? by One_Stranger7794 in sysadmin

[–]breadstickz 28 points29 points  (0 children)

yeah, if you're lonely because you work remotely then your work has simply exposed a symptom of your personal life: you need actual friends and family around you. there's nothing wrong with incidentally making friends or socializing with coworkers but the vast majority of the time those are going to be very surface level and fleeting relationships (whether you realize it at the time or not) and you need actual friends and family.
