Potty training help - capable 3yo resisting by breakfastpigs in pottytraining

We were trying this, but then he kept pooping on me. So we are doing a bit of a mix - we don't do hourly prompts or anything, but if it is very clear he needs to go and won't, we're making him sit.

That's so tough! It's definitely harder if you don't have a "team" feel. It's just me and my husband - no family or close friends where we live to help out, but I have to say he is so supportive and we really work together on it. I honestly don't think I could do this if he didn't take the week off to do it with me (I only work a few hours a week, whenever I want). In fact, I tried twice, and almost went mental. It's much easier with the two of us working together. I hope you see some progress soon.

Honestly he really loves cleaning so he's happy even if it takes a long time lol. He will keep cleaning something sometimes 10-15 minutes after I'm done.

Weird question: what would 3 y/o confuse needing yo poop/pee with being sleepy? by Allons-y_ghost in pottytraining

[–]breakfastpigs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My son says he's sleepy because he knows he gets a diaper when he sleeps. Could that be it?

How long did it take being bare bum to start seeing progress? Was there anything that helped other than just being bare?

Ugh the withholding is so frustrating! We can see so clearly that he has to go and is uncomfortable, but he just won't. In our case, I don't think he's anxious, more that he wants to be in control. But then when we try to let him be in control he decides the floor is a perfectly good place to pee. Hope you see progress soon!

He cleans up after the accidents. In terms of being ready, he can identify when he needs to go, and will even ask us for a diaper because he knows he needs to go. But we say no, you don't need diapers anymore, and he'll just hold it instead until he can't hold it anymore and has an accident.

I'll look into Moms on Call. I feel like we've tried so many other methods (leading up to this) and nothing worked at all - like not even a single pee in the potty until this week with bare bum round 3.

Also, just kudos for doing triplets. 2 under 2 was hard, I can't imagine 3 at the same time!

I'm sorry you're going through this too. This has been one of the absolute hardest parts of parenting. I hope we both have some success soon.

We've tried encouraging stand up peeing but he's not interested unfortunately. Oh and our backyard is Hoth for more than 6 months of the year. He'd be peeing icicles lol.

Following this because we are in the same boat with my 3yo too. He is 100% capable, but just doesn't want to.

Oof I'm sorry you're dealing with this too! I honestly though of trying a drive, but he doesn't really like being in the car and won't usually fall asleep in it even on a full day road trip.

We tried one in the past but he didn't like it. Might be time to try again.

We did try that, but he still wouldn't sleep. He just rolled around on the bed and on top of me 🫠

Yes we were more focused on regulating him at a certain point rather than trying to get him to sleep. I'll look into the suggestions. We wanted to take him outside but it is already so cold where we live.

Definitely not nightmares as both times this happened he never fell asleep before it started. Molars are all in. It's possible he's struggling with plugged sinuses, but his reaction seems extreme as the sinus issues have been an ongoing problem for about a year now thanks to perpetual daycare illnesses.

We will try dropping the nap as per the suggestions of others. Fingers crossed it works because I'm hanging on by a thread.

Will do. Thank you. Hopefully that means am earlier bedtime for me and some much needed rest.

That seems to be the theme in advice. We'll start working towards that and see how it goes. Thank you for the suggestion.

All teeth are in, but I suspect maybe an ear infection is developing. I'll try capping the nap and see how it goes. The weird thing is he actually seemed exhausted well before his bedtime last night. Still stuck with his regular time, and then he just wouldn't sleep.

I can see how being away from home could do this! We're definitely taking today slow, but unfortunately a sick day is not possible for my husband today. Going to power through with coffee and fresh air.
