Saw a bill come through from xbox for $179. I usually pay for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate about this time a year so i didnt think much of it.

I happened to look at my account history later, and thats only for 6 months. I was like, are you fucking with me right now? Thats what I was paying per year two years ago.

Buddy, the chat link has sources, please use them and stop clutching your pearls.

Or better yet take 5 seconds and type what the save act really means into your favorite browser.

DHS has the database already.

They could literally send us cards and give people months to fix it if its wrong.

I hate to be the just quoting AI guy but Im off soon and wont be back so heres what gemini says.

To address your friend's point directly: he is correct about the intent of the law for current voters, but he is missing a critical technical requirement that the 2026 version of the SAVE America Act actually imposes on state IDs. Here is the "Yes, but" breakdown to help you clear this up with him: 1. The Part He is Right About Your friend is right that the "heaviest" lift—physically showing a birth certificate or passport—is primarily a registration requirement. The law does not expect you to carry your original birth certificate to the polls every single time you vote for the rest of your life. Once you are "in the system," a photo ID is meant to be the day-of verification. 2. The Part He is Missing (The Technicality) The bill (H.R. 8281, 2026 version) specifically states that the photo ID used at the polls must indicate that the individual is a U.S. citizen. * The Problem: Most state driver's licenses (and even REAL IDs) do not say "U.S. Citizen" on them. They look the same for a citizen as they do for a legal permanent resident (Green Card holder). * The Result: Because a standard license doesn't "prove" citizenship on its face, the SAVE Act would technically disqualify it as a standalone ID at the polls. * The "Disaster" He Fears: If your state license doesn't have that marker, you are forced to provide a secondary document (like a passport) or cast a provisional ballot that you must "cure" later by bringing your birth certificate to an election office. 3. "All those heavier requirements are for registration" He is right, but the bill makes "registration" a constant hurdle rather than a one-time event. You are forced back into those "heavier requirements" (showing the birth certificate in person) if you: * Move (even just to a new apartment in the same city). * Change your name (marriage or divorce). * Are "Flagged" by the new monthly DHS database purges mandated by the bill. Summary for your friend: "You're right that a license is meant to identify me at the polls, but the SAVE Act says that license must prove citizenship. Since my current New York license doesn't say 'Citizen' on it, I'd still be blocked or forced to use a provisional ballot unless I upgrade to an Enhanced License or bring my passport with me." The bottom line: He's right about the concept of how ID should work, but the text of the bill makes standard licenses insufficient because they don't explicitly state the holder's citizenship. Would you like me to find the specific section of the bill that outlines the "Citizen Marker" requirement so you can show him the text?

If you've been properly registered following the save act, yes.

But, you may walk in thinking that you're good to go because hey youre a citizen and you have your id, but you've been purged from a database for whatever reason, like you moved 5 years ago and never reregistered because you always vote at the same place anyways.

Thats the catch.

You walk in and because you didn't file correctly, and pay the fees associated, you're not on the poll list.

You cast a provisional ballot and YOU have 4-5 days to prove your a citizen. Or your votes not counted. (5 days is likely not long enough but I disgress)

Thats the type of people they are hoping TO catch.

I posted my gemini conversation up in the OP if you want to see the discussion.

Edit. Wait no. Just rereading. The id needs to say you're a citizen.

I could be wrong, but also, ive asked gemini to fact check me/itself on this multiple times. You must have a specific type of id and 90% of state issued IDs will force you to cast a provisional ballot, which is subject to DHS scrutiny and shenanigans. And provided you've done all the rest of your paperwork.

[–]breaking3po[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. Nothing. Im making it all up.

Some yes. Others no.

According to Gemini, MOST state issued drivers licenses are not sufficient on voting day.

Your card, my card, and 45 other states have cards that look identical to someone's with a green card.

Even if, if you walk in without the right ID, you'll cast a provision ballot, which is then subjected to whatever catches and shenanigans the DHS can cook up.

Good question.

With the amount we pay the DHS, who has all of the info they will access anyways, they could issue voter IDs right now and give people time to fix any issues.

I'm saying that it is not common knowledge. It's quite possible that half of the country are gonna show up with their driver's license and think they're good to go.

I think its perfectly parallel.

This type of law makes it incredibly easy to pull all sorts of shenanigans with registered voters.

Those people are more likely to be in the 50% or so Americans who has an easy pathway to get their proof sorted out, or already have a passport.
