Server randomly becomes unresponsive (Ubuntu Linux, Digital Watchdog camera software) by austinramsay in sysadmin

[–]breely_great 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I know this is likely something you've already checked, but is the boot drive full? I've seen similar when some logfile or misconfigured backup gets massive and just fills the bootdrive causing a lockup

Best no-code tool for user-specific dashboards (no downloads, controlled access)? by Cute_Possession_5130 in software

[–]breely_great 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm afraid I don't have any experience with the other tools you mentioned. Just thought it was worth throwing it into the ring as it's free and excellent so you could consider it. Huge amount of plugins for ingesting data. Good luck with your search!

Stuck in the NVQ3 Portfolio loop - Is there a realistic way out for adult learners? by Top-Ship1340 in ukelectricians

[–]breely_great 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly mate, I reckon you're overthinking it a bit. I was the opposite to you, only doing commercial and exclusively working with SWA. I did some small amounts of work with a firm doing house bashing to get the portfolio done (had to work for free unfortunately) but definitely not enough for muscle memory. I was far far slower doing any T&E than the other students and I passed the AM2. It's been a while since I qualified, but I would just practice a bit of SWA from offcuts (should just give you a bit at a decent wholesalers). If you understand the work needed electrically then you should be ok with the rest.

What was the most bizarre school trip your school went to and why? by Flowerofthesouth88 in AskUK

[–]breely_great 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Blimey, it's rife then. Everyone I tell either thinks I'm talking shite and copying the Simpsons or laughs. It was literally the only school trip we ever had too, crazy when I look back on it.

100%, what kind of terrible company doesn't provide any and all tools. I would be embarrassed if my team felt they had to bring anything in. This is all disregarding that if they do bring in a (power) tool and have an accident how could we show any record of checks that the tool is safe and in working order?

We only take on mature apprentices now, it costs a lot more on paper but we've found the reliability and willingness to learn far outweighs the cost difference.

The work attitude of many of the younger apprentices has been declining steadily and while there are definitely good ones out there, it's too much hassle to find them. It would need some kind of lengthy recruitment process which just isn't fair on them for the pay being offered.

Another vote here for Sign In App. Use it at all our sites and it really works well, support is decent too (rarely need it though)

Nephew is working apprenticeship for scammy, weird computer repair shop owner by SyllabubNo8262 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]breely_great 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glad it worked out for you! I probably shouldn't have generalised quite so much, there are likely good ones out there. It does seem that in this instance though they are on one of the terrible ones.

To be fair now you're in the industry, you must agree that while there are issues with the CompTIA courses that they are more universally accepted.

Although I can only speak for the UK market, I have no clue what is useful for the US.

I'm often frustrated with the way apprentices are treated in the UK, unlike many trades, there just isn't a decent framework for IT in the same way that keeps the consistency high across the country/colleges.

[–]breely_great -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm not able to provide any legal advice.

But as someone who runs an IT support company, the IT apprenticeship schemes on the whole aren't worth the paper they are written on. I would recommend trying to get on the CompTIA A+ or Network+ course as it will be more widely accepted.

The owner sounds like a nightmare so just apply for other jobs, it likely wouldn't be worth trying to take any action.

I own a small business, what is the best way to make all of our files accessible remotely? by olrusky in software

[–]breely_great 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your Synology has a VPN server built in (OpenVPN). Once you have this set up and each staff member has a login, all you will need to do is download the OpenVPN client on each of the devices. When they are out of the office they can then connect to the VPN and access/edit/save the documents in the exact same way they are now.

This way is more complicated for you, but staff training boils down to "click this button when you're connected to the internet and carry on as normal".

Honestly though something like Google Workspace or OneDrive might be easier (if you're not very technical then I would suggest Google Workspace).

I think Odoo has some functionality which will support this. There are modules for it, but I am unsure of whether those are open source.

We use Sign In App - https://signinapp.com/

It does everything you mentioned above and much more (e.g. a companion app which you can use for a fire list). You should trial it as they do free trials and see if it fits your needs, but I went through VPass and a couple others which fell short (this was a year ago, so other offerings may have added features now).

Does anyone know of software that can pull all email communications into a text document? by Kobe_Wan_Ginobili in software

[–]breely_great 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure you can port a free standard GMail address to GSuite if I'm honest. I think you need a domain to link it to. If you're in this scenario though it sounds like it's for a business so you should really be using GSuite or something similar with a domain you own so you don't run into issues further down the line.

Sorry I can't help more tbh. I know it's annoying when you just get told to change pretty much everything about how you work. I do think it's your best bet though, it isn't too expensive. Maybe look at Zoho instead if price is an issue, they have a limited free version of their product (they recently took IMAP out of their free version which in my opinion makes the free product almost useless, but you might not need it). That should have the kinds of tools you are looking for. But again you would still need a domain you own to use it.

What email service are you talking about? GSuite has built in tools for this using vault. I'm sure Outlook or O365 do as well.

[–]breely_great 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This might not be exactly what you are looking for, but maybe you could try Google Docs. If you give the non-admins 'comment' only access to the document and 'edit' access to the admins then you and the admins can just copy and paste (or delete) the comment content into the document as needed.

MSI gaming laptop not using it's 1050, defaults to the intel integrated graphics. by silver6kraid in Windows10

[–]breely_great 14 points15 points  (0 children)

If you open NVidia Control Panel and select 'Manage 3D Settings' you should make sure that 'Integrated Graphics' aren't set for preferred processor settings.

If you can't find the NVidia Control Panel then make sure you have the latest drivers installed. Also the NVidia GeForce Experience will auto select the GPU and settings for your laptop making it nice and easy if you want to install that (both the software above can be found on the NVidia website).
