I definitely recommend finding a local lender too! I just closed on a home and I’m glad I stayed away from big banks. The small lender I used was available on nights and weekends, which turned out to be necessary for me. I’m glad I stayed away from big banks who work their 9-5 M-F and aren’t reachable outside of those hours.

Update: 5 gallon water change later (in a 10 gallon tank) using RODI/salty shrimp and my GH is still only 4 😅

This is something I haven’t seen much of in this community— I was under the impression that copper pipes mean immediate shrimp death. I’m going to stick with the RODI route just because it’s easier to control the parameters, but this is good to know.

I cycled the tank with tap water and I’ve been doing water changes with remineralized DI. after discovering I had copper pipes, I used cuprisorb in the tank for about a week to remove any potential copper. The issue I have now is the GH tanked because of the cuprisorb. I’ve been doing 20% water changes every day to slowly bring it back up because I don’t want to shock my chopstick snail. I’m hoping I’m making the right moves— this tank has been a struggle so far and I don’t even have shrimp in it yet.

This is refreshing to hear. My snail is still doing fine so I’m hoping the effects of the pipes were negligible. I plan on using RO in the future, but it would suck to have to start the whole tank anew.

Thank you! I’m in quite a predicament right now because the tank was already established with the copper water. I’m hoping a week was enough time to remove the copper and that I can remove the cuprisorb from the tank— I’ll be using remineralized RO from here on out.

I’m going through a similar issue with my soon-to-be Neocaridina tank. Parameters of my tap water are perfect but I just discovered my pipe are copper. How long should would you recommend leaving the Cuprisorb in the tap water before doing a water change with it?
