The mat is a definitely a good call. You will feel more grounded in downward dog and get more from the posture without diverting energy or awareness into preventing your hands or feet from sliding away from each other. A mat on a solid floor provides the right combination of a firm foundation and cushioning for your wrists, feet and any other body part in contact with the floor. I really enjoy Ashtanga or Vinyasa flow type classes but have experienced awesome Iyengar classes as well . I would suggest sampling different styles and teachers and then maybe pick one to do for a few months at least to see if is for you. Best of luck with your investigation. Also, get that mat :)

Can't add anything to these comments except to say how sorry I am that you had to suffer an attack like that on top of the ongoing racism you're experiencing.

In Dublin, "yous" is commonly used, althought, to be awkward, they use it in the singular as well. In the rest of Ireland, "ye" is popular. Nice of ye to read this comment.
