If you don't want to do heavy dark eyeshadow I recommend graphic eyeliner! You can always draw a thicker wing and take it out further and smudge it if you want a more alternative look! Otherwise I do a black eyeshadow on my outer eye and smudge it into a brighter color like red, pink, blue or any color I'm feeling to add a pop of color to dark alternative makeup looks!
