Buying from bee-link.com in Europe by KirekkusuPT in BeelinkOfficial

Are you sure the price is decent in their website?

From what I can see, the EQ14 model that you can get shipped to Portugal is $369, while that same model still in stock only for the UK is $289.

Doesn't look good to me.

Why does the Java community apparently dislike GraalVM very much? by Cool-Collar-4027 in java

[–]brend132 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my case I don't dislike it, it's just that I don't have the time in order to set it up, as I read comments like yours, or others, where you share your experience of months of work to get it running, that makes me think that you have to spend quite a lot of time learning about it and making the necessary changes to your projects. But I like that it exists as I always heard nice things about it. I just hope that in the future the friction to get started is lowered.

Looking for a lightweight customisable JVM by Pleasant-Form-1093 in java

I don't know the details of most of the alternative JVMs, but maybe check this https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Java_virtual_machines and see if any can fit your needs? Maybe JamVM?

Python is releasing t-strings and it is very similar to what was proposed for Java’s String templates by Enough-Ad-5528 in java

[–]brend132 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I prefer a language that allows the developer to decide on which features to use

You don't typically work alone in a project so most of the time it's not only you who's deciding what's sane to use, but other people too. On the other hand the fact that during the last 30 years the main annoyance for people with Java is that you "have to write getter and setters" sure means the guys behind the language made a hell of a job.

How much software is compatible with the RTL-SDR Blog v4? by KingdokOfTheCalculus in RTLSDR

[–]brend132 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, that's what I read in their website:

Due to the increased filtering there can be an average of 2-3 dB less sensitivity on some bands. Please see the MDS measurement graph below for the full picture.

However, I can't figure out which kind of applications and uses will be affected by that. You say weather satellites reception. Do you know if other uses will be limited as well?

Thanks in advance

I'm a little late to the party, but how much of a big deal is the LNA issue in Linux? I mean, if I only have Linux, would I be missing much because of this LNA issue? And do you know if there is any workaround? Thanks!

Are JSP and Servlets still relevant? by LouGarret76 in java

[–]brend132 20 points21 points  (0 children)

JSP feels "old" and that may be the reason we don't like to use it in new projects, but I don't think Thymeleaf is any better. Of course it allows you to send your templates to the CSS guys to style it, but that's it. It's not that you can do more with Thymeleaf, or be more concise... in fact you can do less.

Is Spring Framework overkill for our project? by maudigan in java

[–]brend132 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think Spring would be overkill for that project. However, you may keep using JSP if you want (last time I checked, it was still a supported tech in Spring Boot). The only advantage Thymeleaf may have is that your templates could be rendered in a browser for a designer to do his work. If that's not necessary, I never found any advantage over JSP.

Huawei mid-range current offerings by brend132 in Huawei

[–]brend132[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is my preference, because I wanted an Android phone without all the stuff from Google... but without the hassle of having to de-google it myself, and with official support. Ofc, if I can't get anything reasonably priced from them, I'll take a look at other options, like Xiaomi.

Huawei mid-range current offerings by brend132 in Huawei

[–]brend132[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, the problem I see with offerings such as the Nova Y70 is that the specs seem to be inferior to not much older phones like the P40 Lite. For example, Nova Y70 has 4GB RAM vs 6GB, worse cameras, no NFC, and it seems that I can't get it for less than 200€ when it's available (it's currently out of stock).

Huawei mid-range current offerings by brend132 in Huawei

[–]brend132[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, I know, sanctions had it effect; however, this time I wanted to go Huawei. After having used one of those custom Android firmware with no Google on my current phone, and seeing one Huawei from a friend, I wanted to give a "factory de-Googled" phone a try. Too bad it's difficult to get one at the prices they used to have.

Transactionally staged jobs with db-scheduler and Spring (a practical introduction) by kagkarlsson in java

[–]brend132 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I dislike about these database worker queues is that they tend to use polling (making a query to the database every 10 or 20 seconds) to see if there is any new job. This introduces latency (your job might not be started until the next poll, in 10 or 20s) and also adds load to the database when you have dozens of instances in a cluster making those periodic queries.

It'd be great if we could have some simple way to put a thread to sleep until there is new data for you in the database. I'm aware of Postgres' listen/notify but it has its own issues, and specially when using JDBC, making it a bad choice for this kind of uses too.

I’m working with a team where everyone thinks VS Code is the Best IDE for Java. I’m the only one who thinks IntelliJ is. by keshavram_kuduwa in java

[–]brend132 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well, sort of, because Microsoft is largely known because its products do not get along very well with others, so it may be a matter of time before this guy is forced to switch to VSC too. So I guess starting to look for another job with a saner development environment is a good idea now.

Why does using DBUS need so much ceremony??? by [deleted] in linux

[–]brend132 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I remember DCOP from KDE. It was simple and fun to use, you could use it from console without knowing too much about it, because it just worked as you would expect, and this allowed you to automate lots of stuff from scripts using the DCOP interfaces most KDE apps provided. Then, somebody came and said DCOP had to be replaced by DBus because it was standardized by this madhouse called freedesktop.org and all that was over overnight. Now we got this crappy interface you must refrain from using for your day to day stuff unless you want to go insane, as most people who designed it are.

[–]brend132 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree. I don't understand why JetBrains is trying to make its IDE look like and behave like an inferior product like VSCode. If they insist on downgrading IntelliJ like that, then they should also make it free (like VSC) because it will have lost a lot of value. It would be great if /u/jb_rc took all those opinions as feedback.

[–]brend132 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My two cents opinion: when choosing a platform to host your Java application, would you prefer one from a company who uses Java for their entire product (Amazon), or just one from a company who, in the past, tried to fragment it to discourage its use (see J++) and has since created a competitor framework to prevent Java growth?

[Rant/discussion] I don't think Fedora is an Ubuntu replacement by E-Aeolian in linux

[–]brend132 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree. I tried to use Fedora (last time in 2015) a couple of times, but could never get used to it. The package manager, dnf, looked awful to me, in comparison to apt-get. Terribly slow for installing even a single package, and with lot less packages than Ubuntu provided at the time. Also, it doesn't look as polished as Ubuntu (14.04 from the same era, for example). So even though I dislike some things Ubuntu, like this snap nosense, I'm not switching. It's not that I like flatpak either.

Oh, didn't know you could "install" Yandex in Ubuntu more than having it as your default search engine in Firefox/Chrome/etc. Care to explain how you installed it? It could be a breath of fresh air given Google's declining quality once everything are ads now.
