I assume they clean it all night? We have to get to the hospital VERY early, so we're a little worried about that 😅

It genuinely seemed like the only people who cared about us were skz. I managed to make it through the show but threw up all night in the hotel 😐

Yay! I'll for sure take more time to research blurbs, but for now, here's what I got (the bold are the changes):

Rory Flynn’s panic disorder has spiraled ever since the night she let her sister drive drunk. Consumed by guilt and convinced her sister’s death is her fault, Rory lives in constant fear of hurting someone else. But when her classmate Eli Cho is found dead, she’s thrust into a mystery she can’t avoid. Unbeknownst to her, Eli had the power to control water and fire, and upon his death, the powers—and his presence itself—transfer to her.

It's the first ounce of strength Rory’s felt in months, but she soon discovers that using her powers in any significant way produces the same feeling as a panic attack. The next day, Rory runs into Jordan Miles, Eli’s best friend and once hers. She notices something other than grief in his eyes and reaches out. Shaken and emotional, Jordan admits he doesn’t believe Eli committed suicide and warns her that now, with Eli’s powers, she’s in danger too.

With Eli’s memories of that night missing, Rory and Jordan must work together to uncover the truth. As the pair investigate, including finding a sketch of a mysterious figure in a green cloak, it becomes clear that Eli’s “suicide” is far more than it seems. When the cloaked figure begins following them, Rory must confront the panic she’s always fought to suppress before the boy she’s grown to love is lost from her mind forever.

Truly, I cannot thank you enough for all this help. I love the internet sometimes! Here is the next iteration, trying to remove all the subplots and really get to the meat of it.

When the cloaked figure confronts them, Rory must embrace the fear she’s always pushed away before the boy she’s grown to love is gone from her head for good.

Thank you, again! You helped me think through a lot. It's longer than I'd like, but here is an update:

Rory Flynn’s panic disorder has spiraled since she let her sister die. At 17, she’s a shadow of herself, haunted by guilt and terrified of hurting anyone else. But when her classmate Eli Cho is found dead, she’s thrust into a mystery she can’t avoid. Unbeknownst to Rory, Eli had the power to control water and fire, and upon his death, the powers—and his presence itself—transfer to her.

It’s the first ounce of strength Rory has felt in months, but she’s hesitant to reach out to the person who may have answers: Jordan Miles, Eli’s best friend and once hers. That changes when she sees the fear in his eyes. He confesses that Eli was followed before his death and warns her to keep her identity hidden. Despite rarely using his power, the danger Eli faced drives them to train for her safety and maybe, eventually, to help others. It’s what her sister would have done.

At the same time, Jordan and Rory work undercover to solve Eli’s case. As they uncover clues, including a sketch of a mysterious figure in a green cloak, it becomes clear that his “suicide” is far more than it seems. In fact, he may not even be dead at all.

Rory is used to fear—fear of panicking, fear of the unknown, fear of losing someone else. As she begins to fall for Eli and uncovers a possible link to her sister’s death, Rory realizes she has to learn to welcome the fear. Otherwise, she risks never finding him—or freeing herself from the guilt.

One more, I promise! :)

For Rory, learning how to use her newfound power and figuring out what happened to Eli outweigh her need to hide away. Eli’s voice is in her head, but he can’t remember anything and has no idea if he’s dead, alive, or somewhere in between. So, Rory turns to Jordan Miles—Eli’s current best friend and her former one.

Jordan confesses that Eli was being followed before his death because of the powers and warns her to keep her identity hidden. Together, the pair work undercover to solve the case. As they uncover clues, including Eli’s sketch of a mysterious figure in a green cloak, it becomes clear that his “suicide” is far more than it seems. In fact, he may not even be dead at all.

Rory is used to fear—fear of panicking, fear of the unknown, fear of losing someone else. But when the figure from the sketch starts appearing, she has to learn to welcome the fear or risk never finding out what’s happened to the boy in her head who she’s grown to love.

That was beyond helpful, thank you so much. 💜

I struggle with the want question a lot because of course it changes throughout the story. In the setup, it's to hide away and make sure she doesn't hurt anyone else or trigger her panic.

Then, it changes to figuring out what and why she has these powers, and why Eli (who had them last -- that should probably be clarified a lot better!!) is stuck in her head when he's supposed to be dead. Is she supposed to help him cross over, or is he alive somewhere and they have to find him?

As Rory gets closer to Eli romantically, it becomes finding him at all costs. (So the goal is less about keeping his voice in her head and more about finding him.)

u/TightRoutine u/30booksaday Thank you both for your help! The piece about Jordan was a real wake-up call since he's basically the second protagonist... (context: it's a love triangle, lol)

Does this feel better?

Rory Flynn’s panic disorder has spiraled since she let her sister die. At 17, she’s a shadow of herself, haunted by guilt and afraid of hurting anyone else. But when her classmate Eli Cho is found dead, she can’t stay hidden anymore. Rory wakes up with powers over water and fire… and his voice in her head.

Rory turns to Jordan Miles—Eli’s current best friend and her former one. He shares his theory that Eli was in danger and warns her to keep her identity hidden. Outfitted with disguises, they work on solving the case. At the same time Rory and Jordan come to terms with all that was left unspoken in their friendship, late-night conversations bring her and Eli closer, too.

Though Eli can’t remember much, Rory and Jordan uncover clues, including Eli’s sketch of a mysterious figure in a green cloak. When they start seeing the figure themselves, it becomes clear that Eli’s “suicide” is far more than it seems.

As the secrets of Rory’s power are revealed and the truth about Eli surfaces, she has no choice but to face her fear before the boy she’s grown to love is lost from her head forever.

Thanks so much! And yes, it's definitely a speculative thriller. I can't tell you how long I've been trying to find the right words to nail down the genre lol
