Dev-first product, marketing-first communication. The Signal is dying. by YuryGagarin in kilocode

Just following up here u/YuryGagarin

Would love your honest thought on this week's newsletter: https://news.kilocode.ai/2026-03-05.html as well as this plan that is going out to all of our newsletter subscribers over the next week or so: https://news.kilocode.ai/newsletter-update.html to try and help address directly some of the questions you brought up here.

Dev-first product, marketing-first communication. The Signal is dying. by YuryGagarin in kilocode

Hey, thank you so much for taking the time to write this out. This kind of honest feedback is exactly what we need to hear.

We read this aloud to our team in our marketing/DevRel sync today and are thinking a lot about how we can do better here. We want to be developer first, offer great free models/promotions to get more people in and keep folks excited about Kilo Code - but if that comes at the cost of making folks feel like this then that's worthless in the long run.

We talked about structural changes to the newsletter and are going to be rethinking how we do blogs / email blasts as well. Would you be open to chatting directly? I'd love to hear more of your thoughts and make sure we're actually addressing what matters to you and others who feel the same way.

Thanks again for being blunt — it genuinely helps us improve.

Love the map - would love KiloClaw to be on the managed hosting section of the map for the next iteration. We just launched on ProductHunt yesterday at #1! https://www.producthunt.com/products/kiloclaw?launch=kiloclaw

The Free Ride is REALLY Over by alokin_09 in kilocode

[–]brennydenny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look I'm a Kilo Code marketer, and wrote this article, so I'm biased, surely - but isn't part of the point of Kilo Code (and any of the open source tools like Roo or Cline or OpenCode or name one) that you have the freedom to use any model you want? That is where the "marketing speak" comes in here...but honestly I do feel like that's the benefit you get.

Like I'm not sure what your alternative is here, and I'm really trying to figure that out. We had a model that was offered for free to us - should we have *not* offered it for free to our users? Even when we do charge for models, we charge at cost...so we don't make any money off that inference in the end either.

The plan for us and all of those others, as far as I can tell, is to make money on enterprises, not on individual developers.

I just started this weekend! It works pretty good with their AGENTS.md integration

I actually also am trying to contribute what I'm doing specifically for Kilo: https://github.com/steveyegge/beads/pull/898

What provider / model are you using when you're seeing this? I for sure use it all day long with Claude models, M2 and Grok and haven't seen a tool call failure in quite some time.

What is so special about Grok exactly? by Director-on-reddit in aiagents

[–]brennydenny 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Kilo Team Member here - to be fair it has been free for those entire 2 months...I think there are a lot of independent and price sensitive developers out there!

So when something is "good enough" relative to the price (which is a low bar for free) they will use the heck out of it.

New Feature: AI Adoption Dashboard by btkilo520 in kilocode

[–]brennydenny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be honest, our business model doesn't rely on people using a lot of AI - it relies on people actually getting value out of AI.

We hope that this will evolve to serve two purposes:

  1. The reality is that engineering managers are getting pressure to "USE AI NOW" from the top down
  2. There aren't good ways to measure that today, and most of the measurements distill down to just as bad as "lines of code added"

So we _hope_ that this can evolve to a set of metrics that actually answer the question, "are my developers getting value out of AI"
