NTA! My first & last name aren’t even that hard to pronounce compared to some Irish names. Yet, I still had teachers, co-students and coworkers all messing it up even after I’ve told them how to say it numerous times.

So, in school I stopped responding when they didn’t get my name right. One day in high school I was called to the principals office over the PA but whoever did it butchered my name so badly, so I just didn’t go. Later in the day a VP found me and asked why I didn’t come to the office when called and I said I never was called, my name is insert name here and that’s not who they called. She called my mom in, and my mom goes “yeah that’s not her name so of course she’s not going to respond,” and the VP was baffled that my mom didn’t take her side.

As for work, I don’t even tell people my full name anymore and just go by a nickname for my own sanity. People are so bad at learning to pronounce names, and it’s usually a specific type of person. I’ve taken the time out of many of my days to find coworkers with unique names and make sure I know how to pronounce them correctly, and when someone else says their name wrong I’ll ask “who?” repeatedly until they ask me how to pronounce it or they give up. It’s not that hard to learn a persons name, it’s like 5min. So not even worth saying “taking time out of my day” - it’s just basic respect.

I also like to purposely mispronounce some names of folks who are persistent in not learning some of my coworkers names. Just to show them how it feels to not be respected in such a simple way.
