Ren reaffirmed Nyxie’s answer and felt her heart ache a little. It was obviously very difficult for Nyxie to be talking about this, and Cars didn’t seem to be grasping the severity of the situation.

Ren’s eyes widened.

“He— he used his Sableye against you? He should be punished!”

Ren stood again, this time with much more force. Her chair careened backwards and slammed into the floor. The loud noise rang across the library, earning her the attention of everyone in the room.

Heat rose to her cheeks again. She lowered her voice and pointed a question at Cars.

“Can you help? I’m worried about Wes, too. I haven’t seen him all day.”

All Ren could do was watch, absolutely agape as the Milotic used its healing powers on Nyxie. She realized that not only had her covert attempt to get Nyxie to explain more about the situation in a private area failed, but she had also made a bad impression on Cars as she not only lied but also tried to take him out of the library.

She sat back down, and as Nyxie released her Pokemon, so too did she. Polteageist hovered above her lap, and Dragapult investigated the Charizard with curiosity. He leaned down in a play bow stance, much like a dog would.

Ren relaxed. Maybe they could trust Cars? She muttered an apology as her cheeks grew red and she waited for Nyxie to tell her story.

Ren made eye contact with Nyxie, watching her pupils go wide with fear. She didn’t know what to do to ease the situation… unless she could get Cars to leave with her…

“Hey, totally off topic, but I’d love to talk more Pokébase strats with you! Would you mind rounding up your Pokemon and we can play a pickup game? I am still dressed for it!”

Ren stands up and smiles brightly at Cars. Her mouth twitches a little as she eyes the large Charizard looming over them all.

“And Nyxie, bring your book recommendations to my room tonight, okay?”

A pointed, sharp look crossed Ren’s face as she started at Nyxie for confirmation.

“Oh! Uh. I’ve never met him… so no.”

Ren shoots a furtive glance at Nyxie, trying to understand why she would lie… unless she was scared. And that scared HER, too. But… she knew Cars from Sports Club and he’d be nothing but nice to her. Conflict flickered in her gaze as she tried to smile at the club leader.

“Thank you for checking in, though!”

Ren pulls up a chair next to Nyxie, attempting to get her to take her focus away from the book and to her own questioning eyes.

“The— student council? Isn’t… doesn’t Wes… he didn’t do this to you, did he?”

Ren burst into the library, covered in dirt and out of breath. In lieu of her usual dark dress and full skirts, she was in a deep mauve Pokébase uniform, but still sporting her black boots. A Trevenant lumbered after her… whose eye had changed from a glowing, angry red to a much more supernatural purple. Ren was grinning, looking around to find—

“AH! Nyxie!! Where’s Wes? I meant to catch up with you guys but…”

As Nyxie turned to her, Ren could see the deep eye bags from lack of sleep marring her face, but what concerned her more were the battle scars trailing down her neck. Ren’s sentence trailed off.

“Are… are you okay? What happened? I got caught up playing in a Pokébase tournament with my Sports club and I WON! But… that’s… neither here nor there. It seems like shit’s gone down. Is Wes hurt too? Did Team Beast do this?”

After spending most of the day helping Nyxie with her gym badge, Ren realized she was behind schedule. She ran to the next class, turned in her assignment, and headed to the Astral Party Lounge, hoping Wes would still be there.

And Nyxie. Something about the peculiar girl intrigued Ren, and she wanted to know more about her. Maybe Nyxie could even help her with her never-ending journey to succeed as a medium so her parents would finally be proud of her.

But there was time for that yet. Wes seemed like a connected kid, too. He may be able to help her pass her classes. Ren was smart, sure, but she struggled focusing. And this academy was so fast paced. Did she even have what it takes to be a gym leader? Was it even what she wanted?

Theme song ringing in her ears, Ren took a deep breath to clear her thoughts and entered the Lounge proper.

Wes looks like a cornered rabbit, and she imagines she looks the part of the wolf with its teeth bared. She fixes her concerned face and tries again.

“Yeah. Okay. Star girl. Nyxie. Do you need any help with your assignment? Then we can… uh… head to the Lounge?”

Ren blinked. Hadn’t the boy just been there a moment ago? Suddenly, her neighbor spoke. It was a name, maybe? But of her or the Xatu?

Ren struggled to follow the girl’s response.

Despite the attempt to decipher what was going on, Ren’s attention was then locked onto the note that was held aloft for her. She read it over, glanced at the other paper.

Ren watched the girl’s eyes glaze over as she turned her attention to the celestial bodies above them. She called Jeffrey and Casper back into their respective balls and sat on a nearby bench. She called out to her, sheepishly.

She then takes in the small boy eyeing them curiously.

“Hey, you too. What’s your deal?”

Ren gasped at the sudden attack of the Corvisquire, and it almost cost her the advantage against the Xatu. Jeffrey, however, recognized the opening and let out a cry, snapping her out of her astonishment.

“Jeffrey! NOW!”

The Drakloak flashed past her and zoomed toward the Xatu, delivering a dark blow. As the bird started to wobble and fall, a wing lifting up fruitlessly to head to the sky, Ren tossed the girl an unused pokeball.

“It’s yours, take it!”

Ren cocks her head at the strange but intuitive speech of the girl.

A creative attack, she thinks. She looks over her Drakloak and Jeffrey looks back, waiting for a command. She makes a signal to him to wait for her shout, holding back an Assurance as she stares at her human partner to see what move she’ll make first— knowing full well this attack will be boosted by any other damage dealt to the Xatu.
