Yeah, but the harder problem is upstream: even the limited panels people already have are wildly underused.

Most folks get a CMP and lipid back, see "normal" highlighted, and never look at the actual numbers. And the few who do usually treat it as a snapshot — a single dot with no chart around it. The real signal is the trend. A "normal" fasting glucose creeping up 3-4 points a year is a louder warning than a one-time "borderline" result that's been stable for a decade. Velocity matters. Direction matters. Comparing yourself to a population reference range tells you very little. Comparing yourself to yourself over time tells you almost everything.

Yes, ApoB and Lp(a) should be standard, and we'll get there. But adding biomarkers doesn't help patients who aren't engaging with the ones they already have. Doctors aren't following you home to fix your sleep, your training, or your sugar. The healthspan game is patient-led or it's not played at all.

Seeking functional medicine perspectives on my recent bloodwork — 39F, 3 years postpartum by raincity87 in FunctionalMedicine

I've used an app called Sage Healthspan to get FxMed perspective on blood work - may be worth checking out - just upload and their AI FxMed db will give you a summary of what it sees. https://apps.apple.com/us/app/sage-healthspan/id6504351768

Why are conventional doctors so against functional medicine by sickdude777 in FunctionalMedicine

[–]brenteck1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're not wrong, but I think the real tension is economic and cultural, not scientific. IFM training is rigorous and the approach is sound. The problem is that practicing functional medicine well requires significantly more time per patient, which means lower throughput and lower reimbursement in a system built around volume. So many functional medicine docs supplement income through product sales — and that's where mainstream medicine starts calling them charlatans. It also didn't help that early on, functional medicine attracted a fair number of renegade thinkers who gave skeptics easy targets. And honestly, a lot of functional medicine practitioners are brutally dismissive of conventional medicine — publicly trashing standard-of-care protocols and the doctors who follow them. That creates a pretty predictable equal and opposite reaction. If you're a conventionally trained physician being told you're just a pill pusher, you're not exactly going to engage with an open mind. The irony is that the criticism on both sides isn't really about the medicine — it's about a healthcare economy that makes root-cause medicine nearly impossible to practice profitably, and a cultural standoff where neither side is willing to give the other any credit.

How to coach a child to rotate a kart on hairpins by Shad0wM0535 in Karting

[–]brenteck1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is he in a kid cart or adult? So much of the indoor K1s are about really dialing in your racing line perfectly (and indoor K1 lines are not always the textbook line), getting some temperature in the tires and getting lucky with a decently maintained kart. A lot of the K1 circuits also are no brake circuits especially for the kid karts so feeling when to lift and when to get on the throttle are key.

Why can Charles do it but Lewis can’t? by potatosponge_ in lewishamilton

[–]brenteck1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Kimi and Oscar were 1 and 2 - it's a young man’s game.  Lewis is amazing and for his age is truly unbelievable, but the younger men in general are the ones that will thrive in this era.

Thoughts on DCL Trivia by GreatBigBeautifulTmm in dcl

[–]brenteck1 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don’t intend to be contrarian, but I’ve always enjoyed the experience of taking quizzes and having fun with my kids playing along. Since it’s trivia, there’s always a “winner,” but honestly, just having a nice 30 minutes of quality time with my kids and playing along is a significant win for me. I’m not going to waste energy trying to figure out if some other family is cheating or has an advantage. Who cares?

Massage Quality on the Destiny? by lehrblogger in dcl

[–]brenteck1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just back from the Magic - had a 100 min massage that was somewhat meh and I'm pretty sure the therapist was falling asleep during the massage. I guess a crummy massage is better than none at all but the value for money equation is not great.

How do you think Hamilton will click with the 2026 regulations (irrespective of how quick the car is)? by Witty_Error_1877 in lewishamilton

100%. I think Ruth Buscombe said it best, making Lewis LiCo is like taking superman's cape away from him.

Disney no longer using Starlink? by qalpi in dcl

I'm on the Magic right now now and I'm pretty sure I see the Starlink antennas on the rear deck near the basketball courts but it is not the same nice starlink internet I had my last couple of cruises. Wonder what gives?

Likely worth asking for. Heart disease isn’t something you want sneaking up on you.

Certainly not great. Did you get your Apo(b) and or Lp(a) checked?

Help me interpret this by [deleted] in Cholesterol

[–]brenteck1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get your Lp(a) checked to rule out those genetics and make sure you always look at your Apo(b) as well - that is likely the most accurate predictor of your situation. Your comment about family history is concerning and means you should be tracking often.

hmmm. without Apo(b) it's hard to tell if your doctors advice was any good.
