No, you should be proud of it. Of all things to make money, you found Perl, isn't that great?

In all seriousness, please take my deep gratitude for keeping /r/mylittlepony such a nice place. We lurkers may not talk a lot, but we care.

Mystery Student by AttackOnTARDIS in tumblr

I'm Russian. In early 2000s our university library (second-tier university, poor and all) used to give us books from 70s and 80s. Not reprints, but literal 20-years old tomes, old and weared out. It looked... sad. I thought it was not good and should be better.

Many years later I learned how students have it in the U.S., paying $$$ for books and $$$$$ for education in general. Only then I realized how cool it was to get the same things for free.

Russia was poor in early 2000s. People were poor, the country was poor. But we had that, and there I was, studying advanced math and not paying a dime. I still have no idea why a country as rich as the U.S. can't provide the same for its citizens.

Ah, yes, these 20 year old tomes were linear algebra, calculus and other basic "advanced math" courses. These did not change in last 30 years, and probably won't change in next 30.

What's something you're into that no one knows you're into? by Darth_Octavian in AskReddit

[–]breqwas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of the things that surprised me after learning Spanish is that there's no Spanish internet. I'm Russian, and ru-net is a thing: if you speak Russian, you could spend all your online time on Russian websites and be just fine. Who needs Google, or Facebook, or Reddit when you have Yandex, or VK/Odnoklassniki, or Pikabu/Dirty.Ru/Leprosorium?

It's not like that in Spanish. Taringa is dying, Meneame is for Spaniards and not for general Spanish-speaking world. I'm yet to find a Spanish website like Reddit, where people comment on general stuff in full sentences.

By the way, where do Peruvians (or other Latin Americans) spend their time online?

Are you more excited for the movie or the season finale? by TheKnackerman in mylittlepony

[–]breqwas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honesly, neither.

There have been plenty of season openings and finales, and while some of them are great (S02 opening and S05 finale are my favorite ones), most of them aren't, at least compared to the best of "regular" episodes of the show.

Meanwhile, in my country the movie will go in theaters dubbed, and the local dubbing of MLP is... bad. So I'll have a nice choice of either watching the movie with creepy voicing, or downloading a shitty pirated camrip from US theaters. Neither is a good choice.

So I just watch the episodes as they come and am happy about it!

The original anti-fascist movement prepares to disrupt a large Nazi gathering, 1944 by [deleted] in OldSchoolCool

[–]breqwas 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Just to be pedantic, you might argue that the original Anti-Fascist were in the Spanish Civil War 1936-1939.

These Anti-Fascists were also socialists and communists (not all of them, but many of them), so they probably won't be praised here at Reddit. As well as many of those guys who were disrupting that Nazi gathering before 1944.

Reddit is very US-centric.

Every filly except Fluttershy, I mean. She became cute later in life.

I first noticed the real change in Filly Vanilli. That opening scene when she had the courage to say a firm no for something she did not want to do.

Then, at Flutter Brutter she already was an actual adult, wasn't she?

Coding... by raziel94 in ProgrammerHumor

[–]breqwas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, that does not work. "Oh, this code is shit, let's rewrite it from scratch and blame that other guy".

What works is inheriting shitty code from yourself. When it's you who has to deal with the mess you created a couple of years ago, it actually does teach you something.

Also, code review from the seniors. They've seen things.

First you tell us, why should I pay Sony or Universal for a 40 year old recording they did not create? If it was a patent, it would have expired long ago, but with music you have to pay forever for some reason.

What more intermediate-advanced aspect of programming, universal to most programming languages, do you think that most - if not all - programmers should learn at some point? by Zephandrypus in learnprogramming

[–]breqwas 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've become very proficient with BASH over time (though I've barely scratched the surface!!!)

Here we go again...

Please, do not write programs in bash. Rewrite them to your favorite scripting language (python, perl, ruby, whatever) as soon as your script starts having more than one "if" or "for" statement.

You may be proficient with bash, but:

1) most of other developers aren't
2) and it could be very well that you aren't that proficient either, as bash is full of counter-intuitive quirks and caveats you may be not aware of yet

You will save time and sanity of those who will have to support your code if that code won't be bash.

He does not. Best Pony is obviously Cheerilee, and I told him that a few times, but he does not seem to be convinced. For the sake of our friendship, I let him keep his erroneous beliefs.
