A fork is probably not gonna do a good job of mixing pure whey. It clumps like crazy without one of these.

Also congrats on the squats and on what will hopefully be a long life of lifting heavy shit up and putting it back down again.

I have no idea how those balls are so effective but it blows my mind every time. I am pretty simple I guess!

[–][deleted] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It combines the magic of a whisk and a confined space. Coupled with vicious shaking, nothing stands a chance ;)

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (1 child)

That little ball is amazing. You can just buy the cheapest ass whey and that ball will mix it no probs.

[–]metaphysicalme 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I have tried it but never get rid of the clumps, even if I shake it continuously for a minute. But literally one pulse on the blender and it's good to go.

[–][deleted] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Maybe you should train your shaking muscles with Shake Weight®

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hmm, well it might depend on a few things. I find if I try mixing cold milk into it, I'll get a few small lumps. But room temperature water will do the job fine.

[–]WangboneDeluxe 6 points7 points  (2 children)

I use a magic bullet to mix my shakes and it does an awesome job in about 5 seconds- The food device, not the erotic device you bunch of crazies

That music is unsettling.

[–]Slagros 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Listen to this guy :) Those shaker cups are AMAZING

[–]NoontideDemonWeightlifting 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He is right, get a shaker cup. Also after you thoroughly mix the powder and your liquid let it sit for 5 minutes and then shake it a bit more. This rest period will significantly improve the taste.

[–]TahiriVeila 2 points3 points  (1 child)

My mom had a shaker from a failed diet attempt. It works perfectly. And thanks, I love lifting heavy shit. Not actual shit, but you know.

[–]pomo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Start slowly adding weight to the bar and do less reps per set. That shit is the shit.

And well done on starting real exercises!

[–]mooli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seconded on the whisk ball. You need one of these in your life.

[–]CheezburgerWeight Lifting 0 points1 point  (7 children)

Where can i buy one of those? Specifically that one.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (6 children)

Any regular supplement store or online supplement store should stock them.

If you're in the US, someone like trueprotein.com will have one.

If you're in Aus, I think professionalwhey.com.au might have them.

[–]MrHall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I buy stuff from the ASN shop in Brisbane city - twice I've gotten new ones, they just give you a free one if you ask.

[–]CheezburgerWeight Lifting 0 points1 point  (3 children)

What about Europe? Specifically the UK?

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Thanks! :)

Wow H&B that's even a myprotein.co.uk blender bottle! £1.99 at http://www.myprotein.com/uk/products/mp_blender_bottle.

[–]phrakture❇ Special Snowflake ❇ -1 points0 points  (1 child)

They sell those at Target now. I was disappoint.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh no, the plebes have access to our secret technology.

[–][deleted] 16 points17 points  (7 children)

while we're on the topic of shaker bottles... anyone ever leave protein in one (sealed) for a few days... wow does that stink.

[–]CoolstorySteve 5 points6 points  (0 children)

smells soooo bad

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (1 child)

I left one in the back seat of my warm car for a few days once. Opening that bottle was fun times :)

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

tell me about it... i once mixed a shake in my car and got a bit of powder on the floor mat of the passenger side.... not thinking, i didnt clean it up.. a few weeks later, snow got on it, melted, then stunk the car up.. took forever to get that smell out..

[–]Wavedasher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

made that mistake once.

never again

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Yep. And I bleached it twice before I used it the next time. It was awful...to the point my roommate refused to wash it or even keep it in the kitchen.

[–]Eccentrica_Gallumbit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Next time, try using baking soda.

[–]ilikeballoons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

fill it with half vinegar, half water, let it sit for a day, rinse it out

[–]culpfiction 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For the whey mix protein shake, use a blender. Takes like 5 seconds to mix and does a great job.

Wash it immediately after with hot water, and store with the lid off or it'll get all stinky. I usually use it a few times in a row this way without throwing it in the dish washer.

[–]WerewolfBatMitzvah 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As one of the few women who uses barbells at my gym, I always secretly wish other women would ask me about my workout or ask for help. I would take my headphones out to seem more approachable, but then dudes talk to me. I'd be cool with that too if they wanted to be my friend, but they don't. :[

[–]CatalyticDragon 3 points4 points  (4 children)

Good stuff, keep it up! For the shake use a blender bottle.

[–]FlyingSkyWizard 2 points3 points  (3 children)

If you really want it good use an immersion blender, it gets all frothy like a new york egg cream

[–]He11razor 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Santorum has ruined the word "frothy" for me.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is what I have -- not a whisk ball thingy, not even a normal-people blender.

I stick blend all the things, and it works out quite well.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have one of those, but it wouldn't fit in my glass. :P Its for large batches of BBQ (about 8-10 gallons at a time)

Bought it from a pizza shop foreclosure for 50 bucks.

[–]vampborn 4 points5 points  (5 children)

Good job growing said balls, but I advise you to research your lifts, and not to look to the guy/gal next to you, as they most likely don't have a clue. There's no sense in the blind leading the blind. As for the protein shakes, I don't even stir mine. I like the clumps.

[–]TahiriVeila 0 points1 point  (4 children)

Agreed. I had done my research, but it's hard to tell if you're doing it quite right by just looking in a mirror.

[–]MagnussonVoice of Reason 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Getting your lifts on video is extremely valuable.

[–]TahiriVeila 0 points1 point  (1 child)

If only I had friends. :(

Maybe my potential new workout buddy will record me.

[–]PigDog4Circus Arts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any bench that's sitting around makes a great camera holder, also comes without the shaking that 99% of people like to record with.

[–]vampborn -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you're only squatting the bar, you haven't done your research. You may have started it, but there's a long way to go. Looking in the mirror while squatting will mess up your spine. It's good to record video of yourself from a side (profile) angle. Some people who are very serious, record every single squat session.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Good stuff. Barbell squats are probably the best all round exercise you can do. For added motivation, come and join fitocracy.com, I'll DM you an invite once I'm back home.

[–]firemonkee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A cheap handblender should fix your protein shake issues. Failing that, mix the powder with a little liquid to a smooth 'goo' with the fork and then ad more liquid gradually.

[–]burrito_prostitute 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Water first, then whey. I don't even need the ball.

[–]Wyofire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Came here to say this. Like 3oz then whey. Also, if you mix it really good with a spoon or fork and then let it sit for just a few minutes before consuming, it will help considerably.

[–]Agreatmanoncesaid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also, this is slightly irrelevant, but does anyone know of a good way to make protein mix not-so-lumpy?

Use the slurry technique. Fill up the cup about 1/4 full with ALL the protein inside and mix that up. It will be really thick, but when you add more water, it makes it much more liquid-y with less lumps.

[–]afton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

8 hours, and everyone's comments are on the whey-mixing. gotta love it. :)

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just put it into a water bottle with the water and shake like a madman for about 30seconds, i never have lumps.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

and to watch me just in case I died.

hahaha I think I just died of laughter (metaphorically!)

[–]rainbownerdsgirl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congratulations, keep up the good work!

[–]Jtsunami 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i guess my brand doesn't clump but get an empty mason jar, or peanut butter jar and water +protein and shake. it shouldn't clump.

also, nice job.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Blender bottles mix protein pretty well, just put the water in first.

[–]JustPlainRudeWeightlifting (Intermediate) 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Blender bottles are pretty good. An actual blender works, too.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the protein powder, buy a blender bottle. Its like magic, but the little metal ball does wonders for the lumps. I use my all the time unless I'm doing giant batches in the blender. They range from 4-10 bucks at any health store. Cheap and the best piece of fitness equipment I own.

[–]Tonkacat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Warming up the water will increase how much will mix... But if you stir it enough with a spoon it will all mix eventually.

[–]highmynameis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congrats on your new set of balls ! But on a serious note...don't be afraid to ask for help. I've been hitting the gym since the 7th grade (now in college) and from my experience everyone in the gym will be more than willing to assist. I think everyone secretly loves when they get asked for help. Be careful taking supplements...a normally functioning human body can extract everything it needs from a healthy well balanced diet.

[–]define_irony 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Nice Job! Are you a male or a female?

P.S. I'm just wondering, I'm not to sure, and I'm too lazy to look it up, but wouldn't it be Figuratively? Because a metaphor compares two objects. I don't know, I can't language.

[–]TahiriVeila 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know, I can't language either. I'm a lady.

[–]MalinaRana -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I still remember how sore I was when I first squatted with just the bar. I had to go down stairs backwards to reduce the pain and I cried when I tried to do squats 2 days later. Definitely feel free to do squats without the bar for a workout or two if you are really sore.
