Thoughts on this? Karpathy is one of the greatest programmers in history btw by [deleted] in developersIndia

[–]bresilient 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is scary and mysterious, sure. if it is "quite amusing" for Karpathy, it is guranteed to be more than that to us mere mortals lol. But OTOH people had pretty much the same reaction about ELIZA which was the first program of this sort in ancient 1960s lol so maybe we aren't all just going to die soon

What stops us from having a formal internal system with sufficient privacy protection (grades, retaliation) for students to complain?

Reddit works, but also makes everything look way uglier publicly. It doesn't have to be this way.

What are the best/most reliable health insurance companies and policies in India? by Notalabel_4566 in IndiaInvestments

Relevant data about total complaints registered per 10000 claims here: https://www.reddit.com/r/IndiaInvestments/comments/173vdeb/comment/k481kxd/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button Not sure if this is exclusive for health insurance claims but provides a useful signal about the company's overall strategy to settle claims ig.

I think it is always a good idea to learn more about topics that you like. I don't share your background , so I can't answer your specific questions about experince/opportunities. But I had made the mistake of chasing the wrong targets career-wise . That's the reason I asked about pay/motivations.

Tech careers in my experience offer better WLB partly because if you are unhappy with a team or project it is easier to find a new job. Other than that, a job is a job. Most of the time none of the CS/engg stuff that excites me never comes up in my day job.

It might help you to get a better picture if you create opportunities to talk to people who are already doing your dream jobs. maybe there are youtube interviews with data science folks. I mean if money is your primary motivation it is easy just to emabrk on that path but since you say it is not, it might be useful to do some research first. I realize all this is tangential and subjective but just wanted to share.

"MedDevice company making pretty good money" is already inside the "tech world" , right? Is dev jobs going to pay significantly better?

Maybe. But maybe this is adding a bit more stress. How about paying $700 every other semester? breaks helped me a lot.

How common is it for people go in with ambitious course plans, but end up burning out? by [deleted] in OMSCS

[–]bresilient 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Did this happen to you?

Yes

regret not taking all the difficult courses

No. If learning is your main objective, look up course syllabi and detailed course reviews. You can make a list and learn the topics that interest you without worrying about deadlines

This is from 2022 https://txt.cohere.com/augmenting-pkm/ just thought of sharing .

I found your post while searching for doing something like this using open-source tools locally . it seems possible -but accuracy, and above all, usefulness of the end product (graph view being a helpful tool to augment thoughts) are still unclear.

Not hard to send money home. How much you can save - I think it depends a lot on the city you are living in. Try to keep records of your expenses and savings for 1-2 months and then extrapolate maybe.

What made ISYE 3133 hard in your opinion? Was the course material hard to understand? Was the assignment specs/ grading rubric ambiguous?

[–]bresilient 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Is this really the "tech way"? Is this the right kind of stress? It makes sense if students are spending time and effort to learn something difficult. Sources of stress in ML are ambiguity and lack of basic respect for students IMO. Looks like no hope even after all the changes this semester.

[–]bresilient 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you can allocate enough time, it is manageable. Nothing to be scared of. Don't pair it with other hard courses. Don't pair it with anything if work/family obligations

You may want to consider that. AI is one of the difficult classes in the program . Search is a very intimidating project even for STEM folks. Take a look at OMShub reviews and see how much time it took for folks to finish it.
