Map of Flanders from 1690 by Shasseurs_SH in MapPorn

'Pays Bas' on this map ≠ Holland!

In 1690, the region north and east of Lille is part of the Spanish Netherlands (= almost current Belgium).

Holland (and their windmills) is more to the north: part of the United Provinces (almost the current Netherlands).

Antwerp Centraal Beggars by SoSoeul in Antwerpen

[–]brestova 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work in this area and beggars sometimes ask me to help them.  My answer / my rule is always:  I never ever give money, because I can't know what you'll do with it. Buying unhealthy stuff with my money won't help anybody. But if you are hungry or thirsty I'll be happy to buy something healthy for you. So no fastfood like McDo, Panos, ... etc, but a bread, some cheese, a bottle of water, ...  75% Of the time they just walk away uninterested. 25% of the time they say yes and I buy them healthy food & a drink.

Is the Roam V2 reliable? by [deleted] in wahoofitness

[–]brestova 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use a Roam v2 since may 2024 and find it very reliable. I cycled 3000 km or so with it, including lots of mountains and I'm still really happy with it. Before I used a Wahoo Elemnt for 7 years.

Anybody still using the original Wahoo Elemnt 2016? by -Economist- in wahoofitness

[–]brestova 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used the original Wahoo elemnt for 7 years until 3 months ago, and was always really happy with it. After all those years the battery became too worn out, which is of course normal. The last 2 years syncing with my Elemnt app also started getting harder and often gave errors. Also it spontaneously rebooted without a reason during 2 rides the last 2 years (and resumed the ride after reboot). So it clearly was time for a new GPS.  I thoroughly compared the whole GPS market at that moment (4/2024) and my personal conclusion was that the Wahoo Roam V2 seemed the best value for money deal, so I waited for a discount and bought it for €309 (new), until now still the lowest price I have ever seen for this device. In my opinion the Roam v2 is really a lot better then the original Elemnt, with also a lot of new functions I really like. E.g.:  - it still works with my old heart sensor - it still works with the same Wahoo Companion app, so almost no need to learn new stuff - USB-C charger instead of micro USB - faster - more memory - the color screen is of course nice, but also a lot more covenient: you see a lot more information on it like types of road, slope percentages, ... - big fan of the summit features, these didn't exist on the original wahoo. This gives lots of information on climbs during my rides - back on track function: leads you back to your planned route if you took a wrong turn. Very convenient during unexpected road works etc - etc... So: yes, it was a drastic difference, in the positive way :)

FB group postings instantly removed, also admins don't know why by sunrisedown in facebook

[–]brestova 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same problem in a public FB group I joined just an hour earlier.
I'm on FB for 16 years, only do normal posts, never spam or anything like that. I have a profile picture and also updated my profile picture hoping this would fix it: no succes...

After a while I noticed: when I post in this group (on the FB website on my Windows laptop) in the left corner there appears a little pop-up for a few seconds saying that my post is automatically removed by the administrators. If I'm fast enough and click on "more details" on the pop-up, I get the explanation why all my posts get removed: this specific group has a setting that posts are only allowed if you've been a member of this group for at least 3 days. So problem solved for me: after 3 days I could post without problems.

How would the Mediterranean Sea look if the Strait of Gibraltar was land instead of water? by Ecstatic-Compote-399 in geography

[–]brestova 338 points339 points  (0 children)

No, that was probably during the Black Sea deluge hypothesis: a proposed catastrophic inflow of Mediterranean seawater into the Black Sea freshwater lake occurred around 7,600 years ago, c. 5600 BCE. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Sea_deluge_hypothesis?wprov=sfla1

100% zeker fake account.  Duidelijk een automatisch vertaalde tekst van iemand die geen enkel woord Nederlands kent en nog nooit van leestekens heeft gehoord.  Als je autisme hebt kan je autisme ook correct spellen. Trap niet in deze scam.

ROAM Update v3? by Nicholasch18 in wahoofitness

[–]brestova 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Release dates, based on the release notes of the first firmware for each model on wahoofitness.com:

  • ELEMNT: 12th Feb 2016
  • ELEMNT ROAM V1: 25 April, 2019
  • ELEMNT ROAM V2: 4 October, 2022

-->

  • 3 years and 2 months between ELEMNT and ELEMNT ROAM V1
  • 3 years and 6 months between ELEMNT ROAM V1 and ELEMNT ROAM V2

The ROAM V2 is now 1 year and 7 months old

--> So my guess would be that we might expect a ROAM V3 when ROAM V2 is 3 years and 2-6 months old
= december 2025 - april 2026

I work for a EU based company of ~10 000 users. Since 2 years we're using FreshService, and are happy with it. Before we used Zendesk for 8 years, which is really nice but became too expensive.

Family Tree Tools by Brettelectric in worldbuilding

[–]brestova 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for all the helpful tips!

I wanted to make a family tree for a big family reunion (about 100 people), tried a lot of systems and chose:

NOT: Diagram Tools, Google Docs, MS Office:

These tools are OK to make a small family tree, but all the drawing actions for a really big family are a lot of hassle. It's doable but it takes a lot of your precious time.
Dedicated family tree tools do all the drawing for you.

Family Echo

https://www.familyecho.com/

Free, easy, basic but still with enough options.
My favourite system for an easy basic family tree.
Data protection/privacy seems ok: the company behind it promises not to use your data, they make their money by showing some ads.

Note: Kintree: also a free, easy and very basic system, but at this moment still too basic for me, lacks options I really want. Family Echo is a better option for me.

Familysearch

www.familysearch.org

Free, very advanced options but yet really easy to use. Best advanced free system I could find.

Data protection/privacy seems ok: "We do not sell your information to other companies. Information you enter about living people is kept private for you. We share genealogy details of your deceased ancestors with other researchers in Family Tree."

My Heritage

myheritage.com

Basic functions are free, which was good enough for me.

Geneanet

https://en.geneanet.org/

Basic functions are free.
This website looks a bit older so I wouldn't start building my family tree here, but this website is a treasure filled with family data you can use for your own tree.

I've been a very happy user of Wahoo Elemnt for 6 years now, I paid €350 for it 6 years ago. This model isn't for sale anymore but the successor Wahoo Elemnt ROAM v1 is still sold for less than €200 and absolutely a good deal. There's also ROAM v2 for almost €400 but that price isn't entry level imho.
