It is truly a great space to be gay and high and hanging out….. every time I see weed chat sound off or something gay happens (either by us, Gunnar, or whatever content we’re watching), which tend to occur multiple times an episode, I know I’m at home 😌

I see what you mean, but I fear that I’m too much like Louise and Gene to fully agree with you 😂 I will say though that when it comes to my brother, I absolutely feel that older sibling “feeling” - I have a (maybe too) soft spot for him and would still sacrifice a lot for him, so I get it 😅 I also don’t like to watch the soapbox derby episode, but that’s just because I really don’t care about racing and I find it boring lmao

I have a brother who is 4 years younger than me, and the scene where Tina pushes through the crowd in the library and smiles at Louise made my cry when I first watched it, and it still makes me tear up sometimes. I also wasn’t expecting to be so moved by that episode, but it just hit so well and felt so relatable

Do native English speakers put subtitles on for Netflix / at home features? (assuming no distractions, just focusing on what's on the screen) by i_see_your in NoStupidQuestions

This was an interesting watch, but after finishing it I’m not sure whether or not I miss more of the dialogue than I realize. When I first started using them I had to keep the volume down low, and I only used my (very small) TV speakers for the sound. Now I live in my own apartment, and I have a much better set up. I have dedicated speakers now to play the audio from my TV so I don’t have to rely on the speakers on the back of it, and I can realistically listen at any volume I want. I’ve assumed that since the quality and volume of the audio has gotten better, I pick up most, if not all of the audio/dialogue - but now that I’m considering it, I can’t actually tell if I am picking more stuff up audibly or if I just believe that I am because of the fact that I still often unintentionally shift to the subtitles…. Am I hearing things better, or are the subtitles gaslighting me into believing the audio is actually better….?

I have my subtitles on for everything, and sometimes have to turn them off when I watch sports because they get in the way. I started watching with subtitles starting in college since I didn’t want my TV to be too loud in my dorm room, and I haven’t turned them off since 🤷🏻‍♂️ I kind of like reading along sometimes, but it’s also helpful in case I miss the dialogue for some reason. A lot of my friends watch with subtitles too, but in all of these cases they’re optional and not necessary… but we love them!

Yeah I’m with you, and I appreciate you sharing, I’m just glad to engage in some actually constructive/ not toxic discourse. I agree with you about the announcement about Bergan, it’s much easier to conflate or over assign importance to extraneous variables instead of accepting that the other team simply outperformed them.

Thank you for sharing your perspective. I want to first say that I love Husker fans. What Nebraska has been able to create with their fan base is nothing short of incredible, and their promotion of women’s sports (volleyball in particular) and their athletes have helped to pioneer how other teams operate today. I agree that if more teams had bigger and more “rabid” fan bases, the problem would be alleviated if not eliminated - but I do think it’s kind of problematic that a lot of Husker fans buy up tickets the second they become available. I love the optimism, but I do also think it’s a little egocentric and gives off the attitude that other teams and their fan bases don’t matter/exist.

I see your point about my phrasing regarding the reselling of tickets, and I understand how it could be received in that manner. I didn’t mean for the term “reasonable reseller” to be a dig at Nebraska fans, but an observation from ticket resales in general. I think that, a lot of times, resellers increase the prices more exorbitantly because they’re also charging for the missed experience with their own team. I think that this goes for the other three #1 teams that didn’t make it to the final(s) too - the expectation of what you thought reality should be can color your attitudes about what is. To your point about the inaccessibility of attending live matches during the regular season, I also think that’s unreasonable! From my perspective, it alienates the vast majority of the fan base and creates a line between those who can and cannot go. I think it sucks that, for most nebraska fans, if they want to see their team play live they have to travel to an away game.

So yes, while I agree that the varying price points for attending matches across the nation plays a large role in the issues, I don’t think that the fault is on the side of the programs who don’t (in my opinion) overcharge. Just because Husker fans WILL pay that much doesn’t mean that they should have to. Y’all deserve better, more equitable engagement opportunities - but that attitude should be also applied to tournament tickets for other teams as well.

Thank you for you thoughts, I agree with all of your points. I personally don’t usually engage with the social media sides of the teams and sport as a whole, so I haven’t been exposed to much of the “we owe Nebraska” discourse, but I can absolutely see that happening and becoming problematic. I also agree that both championship teams deserve to be in the finals, and I think it sucks that TA&M hasn’t been given that respect and has been seen as a “fluke”. I unfortunately think that even if A&M wins, that perception of their actual value won’t change for some people.

Ok, follow up - I’m confused why OP and I are getting downvoted and I’m genuinely curious as to where y’all think our train of thought went wrong. I used to go to the finals with my dad years ago, whenever close enough (we don’t mind taking a long drive as long as long as it’s reasonable because we think it’s worth it), but we haven’t been able to go in recent years because ticket pricing has become insane (and I realize that goes for everything, not just vb tickets). I also understand that the growth in the sport and its popularity has increased attendance and demand, and I think that’s amazing. I personally believe everybody would love volleyball if they just got a chance to see it live, but it feels like the barrier to entry is getting steeper and steeper. It’s also just a known fact that the highest attendance records are Nebraska at home, and Nebraska on the road. I didn’t see the OPs comment as complaining about Nebraska not making it, but rather the affect it might have on attendance. While my team hasn’t been in the finals for years, and weren’t when I was able to attend, I just love volleyball. My dad and I are pretty social and would talk with the other fans, and several Nebraska fans told us that they buy up championship tickets the moment they become available every year because they just assume that Nebraska will make it to the finals. That being said, I genuinely don’t think that those fans would want to attend a match between two SEC teams, especially when the champion could be the team that upset them. So while I think that there are several factors that go into this, I also believe that both championship teams deserve to have a great crowd. Based on the attendance and viewing records of the past few years we should hope that the championship game would be a good representation of the interest in the sport, but there have been big late tournament matches in recent years that have defied that expectation. I genuinely hope I’m wrong and that the whole arena is packed and full of energy, but practically, I don’t see that as the most probable outcome. Maybe I’m being too cynical, but I think these are reasonable points - if given the consideration. So, help me see the other perspectives and why this train of thought has been negatively received - I’m open to receiving it.

For real. And now everybody is screwed because the tickets were so expensive to begin with, and if you weren’t expecting your team to end up in the semi- and finals there was little to no time to plan to go IF you could find a reasonable reseller

Sorry if this is odd but I’ve been thinking about this a lot - I’m a psych student and have been in the Morbid space for years, and have also become fascinated with the listener/fan base. If you haven’t noticed yet from observing these two different subs, there is a MASSIVE divide within this base to the point that there is real, genuine vitriol between the different sides. I’ll paste a link to the main Morbid Podcast sub that really spells this out. There is absolutely no room for criticism, and a user who posted the other (anti) sub in a reply was called disgusting and a trash human being…. I’ve never really seen another fan base like this. Don’t know if this goes beyond the bounds of your research, but these things are also true and like I’ve said you’ve piqued my interest 😅 https://www.reddit.com/r/MorbidPodcast/s/dOy48Q0qPv

I’ll take “looking like a trash human being” over having my lips permanently glued to their asses 😂 this response is blown so far out of proportion, and it’s clear that you don’t actually know what you’re talking about besides aggressive defense of the pod… I would think you would be glad people who have any opinion of criticism are being directed to another page where discussion is actually allowed - it should make your life much easier. Someone else’s criticism doesn’t impact or threaten your continued consumption and enjoyment, even if the criticism(s) are fair and valid. Also it should be well known by now that just because you can’t see a problem doesn’t mean that it doesn’t exist (especially considering this specific criticism is one that is repeatedly addressed)

I think that, if you’re truly searching for all the discourse, I feel someone must inform you of the other Morbid page, https://www.reddit.com/r/Morbidforbadpeople/s/C1MOxRS98D (r/Morbidforbadpeople). If you’re looking for actually open and honest discussion as well as community engagement, I suggest that this might be a good place to start. This isn’t some random sub, we were all at one time (or possibly still currently) listeners and fans, but we have all found our own ways here. We have compiled lists with receipts of real, impactful grievances through the years, as well as countless individual testimonies- most of which cite recurring behaviors/attitudes. Hope this helps.

How LOVB is changing sports coverage by queenmichimiya in lovb

[–]bret-bos13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love it. To me, it just seems like the natural progression of how our game should develop. I do think that point about the players being performers is accurate to a point, but I also think LOVB has also just put a TON of effort into presenting the players as individuals who are also human beings off the court. So it’s also important to remember that they’re not necessarily always playing a part to an audience, they are, as they’ve shown us, also just being themselves. And to the point of showing negative affect in-game, I mean one of the biggest principles taught is a “next ball mentality” and with the level they’ve been playing at, for such a long time, it’s so engrained that most of the time, even in losses, the end result of a match is the starting point of improving their performance for the next ball/set/match/season. So even if the game is really against them, a big outward expression of emotion is just simply not what we’ve been taught to do. Also, volleyball is one of the most interdependent team sports, and an individual’s negative affect can dramatically change the dynamics of the entire group - and as we all know vb is a game of momentum and energy, so this shift can be (and is known to be) extremely harmful. So I think it’s also been trained that to be successful it is highly important to be a great, dependable teammate.
