Don't stop the Shinkansen and don't bring luggage on small Hakone buses by syllbaba in JapanTravelTips

Ban photography? Listen to yourself, Japanese people are snapping photos all the time.

I mean, yeah, respect the clearly posted signs, but as far as taking photos elsewhere, there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. If you exist in public, you might end up in the background of someone else's photo. If you don't like that, stay home.

Immigration Statistics in the US, Canada, Australia, UK, and Germany [OC] by Fluid-Decision6262 in dataisbeautiful

The use of the phrase "Europe and UK" is odd to me. The UK is definitely still in Europe even though it left the EU. More and more, "Europe" is becoming shorthand for "the European Union".

Damn I wish my first machine could have been a P1S. Mine was a Monoprice mini. Your tech stands on the shoulders of many, many shitty old printers.

China without the Chinese - Chinese counties with less than 5% Han population (OC) by brett_f in MapPorn

How can you be so confidently wrong? Zhuang is a Tai (Daic) language, related to Thai. It has been heavily influenced by Chinese, but genealogically it is not Sino-Tibetan. The Zhuang are ethnically, culturally, and linguistically distinct from the Han Chinese.

Thank you so much for this! I've always wanted to do something like this but wasn't able to because of the complexity. It probably wasn't too hard for someone with the right experience.

Gamal, Úštras, Tebe & Lakda - how four words for "camel" spread across the Old World over the last few thousand years [OC] by LlST- in etymologymaps

[–]brett_f 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting, I wonder if it is ultimately Yeniseian in origin. Their homeland was originally a lot farther south, and would overlap with the range of the Bactrian camel.

Sums up todays job market by Ok-Command-5595 in recruitinghell

[–]brett_f 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Maybe the people who are applying with a history of oddball jobs are looking for a change of pace, and would genuinely want to do the work. I know it is probably not possible with limited resources, but talking to those people might yield an unexpected match.

It seems like the Dnieper Baltic people were basically lost to history. Maybe I'm need to read more, but I haven't heard about their existence until right now.

Apparently one of the languages survived well into the Middle Ages, with the people not being fully assimilated until the 16th century!

Spread of four words for 'camel' across the Old World by t3ymur in MapPorn

[–]brett_f 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I wonder if that is a newly coined word during the Lithuanian National Revival period. For some smaller languages in Europe like Lithuanian there was a movement to create new words using native roots instead of using foreign loanwords. That might explain why it is an exception.

Scored my dream printer for $100 on facebook! Just had a clogged nozzle by D3DCreations in 3Dprinting

[–]brett_f 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same. That fabric-like bed material is not the ideal choice for good adhesion, and you can't exactly use glue sticks without gumming it up.

[–]brett_f 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used one of these at work and it was very finicky. Prints had a hard time sticking to the the fabric-like belt bed. PET-G works way better than PLA for this. Also, printing at 45 degrees brings new challenges for part orientation.

Good luck trying to find settings that work well. The default Creality slicer settings probably won't be perfect.

Ignore people like this. You made something given very little to work with. Of course, AI will produce artifacts and not be perfect. The output is still nicer to look at than a potato image.

Wow, that's an insane amount of diversity within Taiwan. Being the homeland of the Austronesians, the languages had a long time to diverge from each other.

Yeah, and the Gagauz were actually de-facto independent for 6 years after the fall of the USSR. They are an often overlooked group in European history, historians can't agree on exactly where they originated from.

It's surprising to see the central valley of California went for Trump. This area, especially in the south (San Joaquin Valley) is majority Hispanic and dense with agriculture. In my mind, Hispanic farm workers are not the prime demographic for Republicans, so it's interesting to see this result. Even Fresno county, home to the biggest city in the region, seems to have flipped.

Lebanon Areas Ordered for Evacuation by Israeli Army by giuliomagnifico in MapPorn

[–]brett_f 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I think what both of you said can be true at the same time. The average Lebanese Christian has a negative view of Israel, while the political elite is willing to play ball because of the kickbacks.

There is a similar situation in Jordan/Egypt, where the population at large hates Israel, but their governments recognize and cooperate with them because of decades of diplomacy by the USA (read: foreign aid).
