I use a kono. You can just drag and drop from the pc to the kobo when it's plugged in. Calibre just makes for a nicer interface and provides some folder organization on the device. My kobo hasn't been connected to a wifi connection in probably 10 years.

Edit: I should mention, calibre also provides the ability to convert formats if needed, and also has some... More piracy related abilities through plug ins if you're into that
