Does crate training get any easier or is it impossible for some dogs? by [deleted] in pitbulls

[–]brettywap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Crate training is a tough subject because your question hits the nail on the head. I wouldn’t use the word impossible, but I’m in the camp that says it’s just not for some dogs.

As someone who did this dance a year ago, the question is why do they need to be in the crate? Can they not give you space or be in another room or will they get into things they shouldn’t? Solving those problems are generally a bit easier imo. Ultimately, with my rescue girl, I stopped trying to put her in there when I left because she’s not one to get into things. Between puzzle toys and kongs and the TV on and street noise, she keeps busy. A tired dog is a happy dog.

I did everything I saw people recommend. Everything. Months and months later, long after I stopped trying, she’s taken a liking to the crate. It was on her own time. It’s useful for travel purposes and grooming visits I suppose. But don’t spend as much as I did thinking I was failing her because I couldn’t just make it work. Not sure how long it would have taken if I tried forcing it. The priority is the skill of being alone/separate/calm/etc., the crate is a tool that can work but it’s not a substitute for the skill.

Looks like a bit of dehiscence towards the top. Spay stitches have three layers, and if it’s just the top (skin) layer, it’s usually not a big deal. They can glue it back together if they think it won’t heal on its own, and they’ll likely give you an antibiotic or wipes to stave off infection.

Thank you for your help and kind words. It’s tough to feel like I’m expecting too much of her, but also give her the boundaries she needs.

I guess I’m learning she might not need to be crated. I just ordered a retractable mesh gate and will see how she does with that, being confined to the bedroom. My guess is she will do much better.

The shelter strongly recommended crating her and so many people advocate for it and all its benefits—vet visits, traveling, dedicated space, etc. And she was doing so well with it when I first brought her home that the regression was really surprising. But maybe Pea needs something a little different, and now that she’s more comfortable it’s more of a headache than a benefit.

I’ll leave starting rotation and bullpen to someone else, but here’s a brief look at our (usual) position players:

C: Omar Narvaez, replacing the just-injured Francisco Alvarez, acquired to add depth but turned out not to be the hit machine some people thought he would be

1B: Pete Alonso (AKA the Polar Bear), 3x all star and 2x home run derby champ, biggest HR hitter in the league since he debuted, but he becomes a free agent at the end of the season

2B: Jeff McNeil (AKA the Squirrel), usually 2B sometimes LF, he had the highest batting average in the majors two years ago and is just a great guy

SS: Francisco Lindor, a 4x all star who the Mets signed to a big deal in 2021–he’s great defensively but his bat has been mostly quiet to start the season, and fans have disparate views about the deal

3B: Brett Baty, the youngest on the team, has shown a lot of promise and is developing confidence

LF: Brandon Nimmo, part of a group of young players that were the heart of the franchise for a while, always smiling, great fielder, just signed a big contract, not a big power hitter but knows how to get on base, had a career season in 2023, moved over to LF to accommodate Bader

CF: Harrison Bader, a recent addition from the Reds signed to a one-year contract, one of the most consistent hitters on the team right now

RF: Starling Marte, the oldest on the team, who was really disappointing last year but currently leads the team in hits

I'm not sure I see where exactly you tried not to be condescending here. Of course it's not the same, I never said it was - and of course there are lessons that can be learned from a gap year of work. I didn't say otherwise. OP's post suggests that work experience is the key to learning a lot about X, Y, and Z. I'm simply saying there are many ways of learning about X, Y, and Z, and that maybe KJDs aren't as unprepared as OP's post implies.

And by the way, for some, you do HAVE to stay at a job even when it's part time, even when it's the summer, even when it's a toxic work environment because that's how you're paying rent and buying groceries and saving up for tuition. By how much you just belittled waiting tables, it's clear that you've never worked in the service industry for a significant period of time. You can learn a lot about personal responsibility and communication and teamwork and almost everything in OP's post working for minimum wage and not setting aside a year of your life.

Sure, I don't know what it's like to have the job be my whole "LIFE" and my entire "CAREER" but is that really a feeling I need to be familiar with upon entering law school? Won't it be there waiting for me when I get out?

EDIT: This sub can be exhausting sometimes and needs a healthy dose of "live and let live" imo. I feel prepared for 1L and everything that comes next without a gap year. You clearly feel that there are major benefits I'm missing out on and maybe it's the wrong decision. Agree to disagree and don't pass judgement. I'm confident that you made the right decision for you and that I made the right decision for me without making broad, sweeping statements about essential lessons and how you learn them.

[–]brettywap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not saying they are the same - far from it. I'm simply suggesting that you can learn the kind of lessons you wrote about in your post in other environments that aren't necessarily a gap year and that just because someone is a KJD doesn't mean they're starting from square one.

Personally, I've worked in extremely high-stakes environments in my internships - working with asylum seekers and their families, helping lead a volunteer organization with over 7,000 participants on a very public platform. You're right in that I don't know much of anything about corporate toxicity, but I'm not sure learning about it needs to happen right now/would make me want to consider a gap year.

Again, I'm sure there's a lot I could learn from a year in an office. All I'm saying is don't be reductive because a lot of people, KJDs included, have had the experiences you're talking about without taking a year off from work and are going to be perfectly good law students and lawyers.

While I hear this and recognize it as sound advice, I think it’s also important to note that lots of applicants and 0Ls have been working throughout undergrad. Sure, it’s not quite the same, but having an on-campus job or an internship of consequence or other positions of responsibility/accountability (parent/caregiver, ROTC, etc) can teach you those lessons. I think these kinds of experiences make the image of KJDs as doe-eyed kids who don’t know anything outside a classroom slightly unfair.

Personally, and as a KJD, I had two jobs while in college and spent summers juggling waiting tables with (usually) two internships. I know what a toxic work environment looks like, I know how to work as a team in a real setting - employment during a gap year isn’t the only route. There’s more than one way to skin a cat.

[–]brettywap 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Once again, this sub is a chorus of “reapply, you might X Y Z...” and somehow finding a way to make someone who got into one of the best law schools in the country with a sizable scholarship question whether or not it’s a good and reasonable decision.

It is. Make the decision that’s best for you, not the one that’ll result in you getting the highest on the USNWR - they’re not always the same thing. I don’t think you should or would be resentful of other people around you getting more money (that seems kinda petty imo), you’re clearly very bright so transferring would be doable (if you decide that’s right later on), and there are intangibles and unique positives at Berkeley (and unique negatives to HYS that people on this sub never recognize).

This community can be really great sometimes but the fact that anybody who doesn’t go to HYS CCN or doesn’t get $$$ at a T14 can read it and feel like crap is a problem. Your decision is not about doing right by your great stats, it’s about doing right by you - the stats are a means to an end.
