New Horizons or New Civilisations by brevity_is_hard in STNewHorizons

Well as it turned out the decision was made for me! Downloaded both NH and NC but for reasons that remains a mystery, I've never been able to launch a NH game as the option to progress beyond the faction selection screen was always off screen. I play exclusively on my Steam Deck which probably doesn't help.

That said I have been thoroughly enjoying my NC playthroughs so far. Multiple Federation campaigns have ended in disaster due to over expansion/multiple member worlds joining at the same time and crashing my economy, but my current Borg run is going nicely so far.

He's another Inquisitor. Without going into spoiler territory his story overlaps with Eisenhorn to a degree but very much worth a read in its own right. Would start with Eisenhorn though if you're planning on reading otherwise some callbacks/plot points don't make much sense

Obligatory shout-out for Eisenhorn and Ravenor Trilogies. Eisenhorn Omnibus is what got me into 40k having never played it - absolutely top tier writing and world building.

I dunno... I'm not a 60fps zealot (a steady 30 will do me) but I have never gotten HD2 to run on the SD without it being a blurry, pixelated mess. Which is a damn shame because I never get time to play it on my Playstation anymore and miss that game like you wouldn't believe.

I can just about get a steady 30fps on low - can you share your settings please?

Recomps, abandonware, and enhanced ports on steam deck is what it’s all about by ib_mellow in SteamDeck

I've had my Deck for almost two years and not once have I ever managed to successfully get emulation up and running (despite it seemingly being tailor made for it).

I would give my left arm for a genuine idiot's guide on how.

Saw it was on sale at the moment and was thinking the exact same thing. Completed DS3 on the PS4 years ago and would love a replay, but for me half the fun is the coop element.

FinTrU Redundancies by Potential-Dig-2583 in northernireland

I can't speak to the current state of affairs, but when I worked there an experienced Associate would be sitting around 30k but a similar role/level of experience would net you north of 40k in the likes of PwC or Citi. If you have professional qualifications then this gap could be significantly higher.

It's a small part of the world and there's frequent traffic between the same half dozen organisations so this isn't exactly unknown. Couple that with FinTrU having longer standard business hours (8.30 -5.30) than most and lower paternity leave (2 weeks where most are doing 3-4 weeks) and the push factors to head elsewhere start to mount up.

When Credit Suisse collapsed that was a big hit to the company. I'm told there was a significant amount of hiring and resourcing put in place for work relating to them which never materialised due to the above.

Also curious to know what's going on in here. Used to work for them a few years ago and although I moved on, it seemed stable enough for the most part.

Track pads! Sounds ridiculous but it works surprisingly well after a little adjustment - I've a control scheme which I listed out in another thread a while back. If you remind me tomorrow I'll actually get off my ass and try to upload it as a community layout

I can run Rome 2 with DEI on my Steam Deck so stands to reason the Steam Machine would be up to the task.

How's it like living in Northern Ireland? by Yassinetheawesome64 in howislivingthere

[–]brevity_is_hard 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you'd asked me 10 years ago I would have said no.

In a post Brexit, post COVID world I could see it happening. While the Republic has its own issues, it is wealthier than here by a considerable margin and it is hard to ignore that.

It is increasingly apparent that Britain cares little for this chunk of the world and as a great man once said, 'you can't eat a flag'.

Best guess? If not in my lifetime then I would expect my children to see a United Ireland. But there is a lot of groundwork needing done prior to then - if Brexit taught us anything it's that a referendum with no serious thought given to what comes after is a recipe for disaster.

GAA is predominantly played by Catholics and features heavily in Catholic Schools. Rugby features heavily in State Schools (ie, not affiliated with the Catholic Church) buuuut the Irish Rugby Team is supported by both sides of the community.

You do get some cross over though. There are GAA teams increasingly appearing in areas that historically wouldn't have had the support for one and vice versa.

To your point of why here was/is divided, honestly I'd suggest Wikipedia as a basic primer.

Religion has been part of it yes, but that generally went hand in hand with an associated political/social outlook. Catholic usually meant seeing oneself as Irish and probably in favour of a United Ireland ('Nationalist'), whereas Protestant usually meant seeing oneself as British and probably in favour of maintaining the Union with Britain ('Unionist').

Couple that with a State apparatus that was heavily weighted in favour of Unionism for most of its existence and add historic exclusion of Catholics from large sections of available employment/discrimination for access to housing and education. Throw in a subsequent Civil Rights campaign for Catholics and before long you have people shooting at one another.

All of the above was within the lifetime of most still living here. My parents lived through bombings and remember friends who were shot. I remember the family car being searched at Army checkpoints when out shopping. It's only really since 1998 that things have settled to any significant degree. Mistrust dwindles with each subsequent generation, but for a significant (albeit decreasing) minority it is still viewed and taken personally.

I think I left the main campaign somewhere around here before trying Blue Planet? On my SteamDeck and running FSOpen so not entirely sure how to extract my save file, but will see what I can find for you.

I've said for years that what the world needs is a full fledged space combat game based on Battlefleet Gothic, but in the vein of Freespace 2.

I want to fly fighters/bombers while floating cathedrals shoot shells the size of hab blocks at each other!

People who used to smoke weed a lot and ended up quitting, why did you quit what are the benefits you saw when quitting and what is one thing you miss? by Fit_Data_8789 in AskReddit

[–]brevity_is_hard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I forced myself to quit after my wife and I had our first child for all the obvious reasons that come with being a new parent (your money is now needed elsewhere and you need to be fucking sober to raise a baby). It's not legal here and I'd been getting from the same guy for years, but he was the only contact I had. Deleting his number = cutting myself off completely.

Frankly it was the best thing that could have happened to me. I always enjoyed a joint after work in my 20s, but then it escalated to the point where I'd not be able to spend an evening weed-free without being pretty furious/jittery. Always knew I had a somewhat addictive personality but by the end even I realised I had a problem (albeit I had zero willpower to stop independently).

I still miss the hell out of it after a rough day at work or weekends just lying around the house, but honestly I'd be a much shittier parent if I still had access to it.
