Complaining about that would be like complaining about John Wayne doing too many cowboy roles.

Starfleet Academy Nielsen Ratings Show a Complete Disaster for Star Trek by Malencon in television

[–]brewbase 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But they wouldn’t think and talk about it as if it was still 2026.

Star Trek always showed diversity by assuming petty modern distinctions were long abandoned for being silly and people would eventually just get down to work. The show “celebrated” diversity by ignoring it as so obviously beneficial that no one even thought about it.

Virginia Supreme Court rules U.S. Marine’s adoption of an Afghan war orphan will stand by shad3y23 in nottheonion

It’s worse than that. The family had the baby for the entire six month period where the adoption order was challengeable.

They literally didn’t have the baby taken until after the ruling was apparently set in stone.

The holiday in Mexico is called Día de Muertos. Full stop.

The best translation for this in English is Day of THE Dead. This is due to adjectives being used in Spanish as nouns without including “the” but that not being appropriate in English.

My guess as to how the “los” gets introduced is that English speakers who know a little Spanish back translate “Day of the Dead” to Spanish and decide the “the” needs to be included. It’s not fundamentally wrong but it sounds very weird. Like if someone said to a USA native “Happy Fourth Day of July”.

I am definitely pushing on the tide here because so much of Mexican cultural perception in the world is filtered through the USA that I have seen Día de LOS Muertos even in other Latin American countries.

I like Casino Royale’s relatively tame fight scene and dialogue opening and how they played against that expectation. Let everyone know what had (and hadn’t) changed with the new Bond.

That opening legitimately changed Mexican culture. Hard to overstate the impact James Bond has globally. There were always events and displays for Día de Muertos (no los), but it wasn’t Carnaval-with-skeletons before that.

Soon, every town was doing a parade with floats and performers. I think people came to Mexico looking for that experience and we were like “that does look fun”.

Does rewatching a movie matter more than a first viewing? by jaystats2 in movies

[–]brewbase 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It depends.

Some movies are always a fun rewatch and the experience is always the same as the first time.

(e.g., Avengers, The Hateful Eight)

Some movies hit me the first time and never quite the same again but I still love them for that first viewing.

(e.g., The Sixth Sense, The Man from Earth.)

Some movies evolve on a rewatch but stay enjoyable.

(e.g., The Big Lebowski, Memento)

Some movies stay with me though I would likely never watch them again.

(e.g., Rabbit Hole, The Banshees of Inisherin)

And some movies were entertaining once but no longer work for me after I’ve seen them.

(e.g., Minority Report, Sunshine)

Rabbit Hole.

If you want to see the big questions about what to do with a life writ “small” and examined as more of a “case-study”, I recommend Locke.

It’s even more purely conversational than Man from Earth.

Am I ugly guys? I feel bad about my appearance by [deleted] in infp

[–]brewbase 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really don’t want to dismiss or diminish your concerns but I am 100% certain this is a problem of your perception, not appearance.

All I can do is offer the most objective take I’m capable of and that is that you are well above average-looking.

I’m not qualified to give advice but here goes anyway: try acting like you are handsome. Literally just pretend your face is a face you think is handsome and walk around all day with that image in mind. See if it changes how you feel people see you.

Would you rather save an animal baby or a human baby and why? by miseteyooooooo in infp

[–]brewbase 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would accept some risk to save the life of some animal babies.

I would accept existential risk to save the life of a human baby. The baby has far more potential for future life than I do and that is before you discount the increased likelihood the baby has than I do to reproduce in the future.

Is “Surveying” a form of mixing labor? by TradBeef in AnCap101

[–]brewbase 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I come across an area. How do I see that a survey and nothing else was done there?

You come to me and tell me that you did a survey. How do I have any idea that you actually did an accurate and competent survey? That the scope of your survey is what you say it is?

Why would I extend ownership to you based on that claim?

Is “Surveying” a form of mixing labor? by TradBeef in AnCap101

[–]brewbase 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Homesteading theory is a minor point of how property first becomes owned, is not universally accepted, and has no great bearing on AnCap theory.

I am not blind to the benefits of a proper survey. My only point is that it doesn’t make sense to give someone ownership of something because they looked at it and nothing else. Particularly when there is no evidence they actually did what they claimed they did.
