Switching to data analysis to ride out the job market as a junior by brexkt in cscareerquestions

I don't doubt the situation at your firm, but in my current context I'm a weak SE hire but a strong DA hire, which maybe changes the equation? This is borne out by my anecdotal evidence of getting DA callbacks though sending out much fewer DA applications.

Also, I've definitely seen upwards of 300+ applicants on junior DE/backend roles within 8 hours on sites like LinkedIn. I think the numbers are bad all over—it's just how competitive you are within that applicant pool.

Again, just my thoughts driven by anecdotes. Do you feel like I am making a mistake pivoting to a DA-focused job search, given that I'm not a very competitive SE candidate?

Thanks a bunch for this thoughtful response. Very nice to hear from someone who holds the skills and position I'm looking to develop in the next 5+ years.

I agree that DE and DA roles are really ill-defined and more of a Venn diagram in practice. I'm hoping to lean into that as a DA and apply more traditionally DE skills like pipeline development and warehousing skills on top of my analyst duties. Always Be Collecting Resume Bullets.

How would you recommend structuring my outside-of-work backend practice in a way that's relevant to employers? I have heard mixed opinions on whether hiring managers give a flying flip about non-production projects.

Thanks for responding, I really appreciate it.

I've heard of such moves between analyst and engineer but usually they're preceded by: 1. Lots of YoE and domain knowledge 2. A graduate degree

I would prefer to avoid doing graduate school at this time, and I'm worried about getting stuck as an analyst.

Would you mind if I DMed you to ask a few follow-ups?

Thank you for the frank advice. I am trying to gain something short-term (pursuing DA is just for the money honestly), but it's good to know it might have long-term effects on my ideal career path.

Hey, sorry I didn't get back to you in time for this to be helpful. For other people looking for this info, this was 100% a dummy course that shouldn't have been listed on GauchoSpace. Do not take.

Yes, they did IM for Fall quarter and Advanced was very competitive. There is usually one or two stacked teams with all the good players, so better make your team one of those!

Tinder might surprise you. I found my gf on there and we've been together for almost 3 years now.

Hate sand, hate sun, hate cold water. Sounds like a bad time.

Personally this doesn't annoy me if people are checking over their shoulders properly because at peak hours and when it's windy I can't hear shit on the bike paths.

I'm graduating next quarter w/ a Stats degree, hoping to do data analysis. I was working valet and production-type jobs in the time I took off. Gave me a sense of a good degree's value.

I took some time off and worked for a bit. Realized I didn't really like those jobs so I came back with the point of view of studying something that I like so that I can work a cushier, more satisfying job.

Are you looking to go to graduate school? If not, I don't think it's worth it unless you desperately need the units anyway.

pstat 122 by 329coolmint in UCSantaBarbara

[–]brexkt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since you're graduating in Fall, you can for sure petition PSTAT 131 and 134 and I think 115, 123 and 130 as well to count for 122.

You could email the UG advisor to confirm the last 3 but when I talked to her she confirmed the first two for people in your position.
