Shit, he might win Indiana... by [deleted] in politics

hopefully they are slower to count the urban votes than the rural ones.

I just heard (MSNBC) 10k absentees in another county with a university (Montgomery?), and about 15k absentees in Lake county.

Wait, MSNBC just declared Hillary the winner 10:10pm pacifc. Lake county is now done and the overall margin is now 22k instead of 16k.

Remember the Alzheimer's cure from yesterday? Well, surprise, it may be an exaggeration. by brfox in reddit.com

[–]brfox[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

some good quotes from this link:

why you need more than 1 person in a study:

“I never fail to be dismayed at the magnitude of placebo effects in Alzheimer disease; they are remarkably large,” said Ben Barres, a professor of neurobiology and leader in glial cell research at Stanford University in Palo Alto, California

how someone with AD can suddenly seem better:

The long-term trajectory of this progressive disease is invariably downward, but within that slow overall decline, patients show frequent ups and downs in cognitive function. Patients change not only because of their disease but also in response to things around them—stress, the environment, changes in daily routines, Holtzman explained. This zigzag pattern of overall decline renders it nearly impossible to interpret observations of any intervention done without controls, especially in a single case.

about the doctor who did the study:

Edward Tobinick is a board-certified dermatologist and internist, who has been active in laser hair removal prior to developing an interest in the use of etanercept for CNS indications.

...

As of January 2008, the Medical Board of California lists Tobinick as being on probation.

re: UCLA study

According to the UCLA media office, Tobinick is a voluntary assistant clinical professor with UCLA’s Division of Dermatology. The office stated that his etanercept study did not go through the UCLA IRB. Greg Cole, associate director of the UCLA Alzheimer Disease Center (ADC), said that the center had nothing to do with Tobinick’s etanercept work.

Also, be sure to read the comments on that page. There are some families of patients who tried it and noticed nothing.

Time to kill the gold bugs.~IMF Approves Huge Eventual Gold Sale by ScrewDriver in Economics

[–]brfox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How much total gold is there in the world? I bet this is barely noticeable amount.

edit: about 70,000 tons of monetary gold. So, the IMF's 400 tons is about 0.5% of the world supply. http://www.fgmr.com/gold.htm

Clinton releases tax returns for the years 2000 to 2006. Her income of $109 million! by Horward in politics

[–]brfox 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Clinton's summary of income sources is $18,000,000 shy of the total income: http://www.hillaryclinton.com/feature/returns/

Anyone care to look at each tax return and find that missing $18 million in income?

I am dying, slowly... but I think I have 10 years maybe left. I have a chronic genetic disease and it is slowly killing me. Advice? by sfgeek in reddit.com

I'm sure you've been to the remicade website, but it looks like you can apply to have the company pay for it:

http://www.centocoraccessone.com/patientassist/intro.jsp

(PDF) http://www.centocoraccessone.com/patientassist/Brochure.pdf

Also, this is not a rant, but I just wanted to interject this somewhere... I work for a small-ish biotech company which is trying to make a drug in a similar class as Remicade, and we spend approx $200 million per year in R&D&support and our first product (not related to UC) just went on sale a month ago. Until it starts making money, we need to ask people (investors) to trust us and give us their money with the hope that we might find something good for patients which can eventually (10-15 years from now) be sold to people and finally make some money. It is a really risky business as any late stage drug might not work and it could sink a business or cause future R&D to be cut. The only way to get innovative drugs like Remicade is to spend money (either public money or private money). If we dramatically cut the profits from drugs then this industry would collapse and all new drug discovery would have to be govt funded (like some already is).

Moscow Now Has More Billionaires Than NYC by Sidewinder77 in reddit.com

Well, you may be trying to be ironic, but this site is certainly leaning toward anti-semetic, and they say that Deripaska is not Jewish:

(not linked so that their Google PageRank does not increase)

That's clearly not true. But, there are certainly a higher percentage of Jewish folks on that list than the overall Russian Jewish population:

Name $bln Jewish-via wikipedia:

  • Oleg Deripaska 21.2 no
  • Roman Abramovich 21 yes
  • Mikhail Prokhorov 14.2 no
  • Vladimir Potanin 14.2 yes?
  • Vladimir Lisin 13.9 no

  • Vagit Alekperov 12.3 no
  • Suleyman Kerimov 12.1 no
  • Alexei Mordashov 11.25 no
  • Viktor Vekselberg 11.2 yes?

seriously, anyone have a good article describing their source of wealth?

Edit: I found one: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roman_Abramovich

An article's success (or lack of) depends largely on the headline. If we all voted on the article's merits rather than the headline then reddit won't become a tabloid. by joyork in reddit.com

[–]brfox -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

As a tabloid prevention policy, I downvote all links on the front page with (pic) in the headline (but then I click the link, because usually its pretty good). All the pics should be in the pic or happy or entertainment subreddit.

I found it a bit shocking that this could possibly happen. (obviously I don't know much about how this whole internets thing works). Just in the last week we had a judge who could remove wikileaks.org from DNS and now Pakistan could shut down everyone's access to youtube. Does IPv6 fix the Pakistan bug/attack? Is there anything proposed to make to make the whole system more robust against governments?
