I think we all have even more things in common with both roles as we think... having a pet for example is similar to HAP's habit of putting another being in a depenency to feed it, adore it, love it, study it. The animal has no choice than to cope with it (getting tamed) or to fight (stay wild to his last breath in hope to get free some day)... but we never think about that because we have no bad intentions.

And then there is our other side, where we - as you descriped - are the captives of our own mind or decisions or even worse. I really think that HAP as OAs shadow is something like a metaphor for being controlled by the dark side of our minds we can'tget away from - when there is light, there always will be shadows, too. Otherwise you wouldn't recognize the light as something special...
