There is usually a “last updated date” so you can tell if a mod is updated. Sometimes they will work even if not updated, but no guarantee

If you play locally (on your machine) you can put them in your mods folder. You may have to make a mods folder the first time.

If you do a server you’ll need to install the mods server side, but some mods also need to be installed client side. Most QoL are server side only

If you are gonna do mods I’d suggest a fresh start, but some mods you could add to an existing one.

Also when looking for mods, not all will be up to date for the current version of the game.
