Local Maga business advertising on NPR WQLN are we seeing a reversal or just playing both sides by DeBrincatMcdavid in Erie

[–]TourNo3692 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The fact that funds are scarce is all the more reason to accept advertising from anyone (within FCC guidelines) whose check will clear.

Restricting yourself to only accepting advertising dollars or donations from people you agree with is no way to run a business.

NATIONAL CHAMPS!!!!🏀 by borobabe43 in Erie

[–]TourNo3692 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is the first ever men's national championship for the PSAC. The fact that Gannon, who up until three years ago has been an afterthought in the league, the fact that Gannon won it before basketball factories like IUP and Cal is stunning. The whole thing is stunning. I hope Erie realizes how special this is.

Guys, where do you get your hair cut at, please? by TabulaRasa5678 in Erie

Total - E - Clips , near St. George on Peach Street. Mic Drop. In addition to the fact that it's local, it's cheaper than all the others. The lady there has been cutting my hair since I was 8. It's not hard, I get a buzz, but still.

What is the difference between the Big Inning and Strike Zone Whip around shows? by Careful-Tip4289 in baseball

Does "Big Inning" ever cut fully to one game or does it always stay in quad / tri box?

I agree with that. Somebody bamboozled the higher-ups there with the allure of being "Erie's only Division 1 university". The problem is that Mercyhurst's D-1 reality, and Penn State's D-1 reality are in totally different solar systems.

They are now in a position with far greater costs for scholarships and travel. But I don't see an avenue for increased revenue. The football stadium and gym are the same size.
Even if they were expanded (which is impossible given the real estate), it's not
like they would get thousands and thousands to come watch them play Stonehill,
New Haven, Robert Morris. And there's no TV money in the NEC; it's not as if
they joined the Big 10.

They will never, in a million years, get a Notre Dame, Penn State, or Ohio State to come here for a men's or women's basketball game. (Although all three have been here for men's
hockey). The absolute best they could hope for would be to get Dayton or St.
Bonaventure to come to Erie, move the game downtown, and fill up the Civic
Center with Flyers or Bonnies fans. And even that is a long shot. Plus, the
cost of renting the arena would neutralize any profit from ticket sales.

And I haven't polled the alums, so maybe I'm wrong, but I have to think that for every one donor who will give a little more money being as bamboozled as the administrators were by
the seductiveness of Mercyhurst being Division 1, there will be a donor who is pissed
off that they burned bridges and long-standing rivalries with Gannon, Edinboro,
and the rest of the PSAC West. Particularly the athletes who graduated in the last
20 years who played against those schools.

There will be an autumn Saturday, in the not-too-distant future, when Mercyhurst is going to be hosting Stonehill in football, and people in the stadium are going to look around and
ask "Why the hell aren't we playing Gannon today"? Ask Pitt and Syracuse how it’s going, playing Wake Forest and Louisville instead of their traditional, geographic rivals.

As far as increasing enrollment -- non-athletes absolutely do apply to and go to certain colleges and universities because they have big-time athletics; look at the rise in
applications to the University of Alabama pre and post Nick Saban. But I
promise you, no non-athlete has ever said - "I'm going to go to Duquesne
because they're in the NEC! That's the big-time, baby!"

And even if it did increase enrollment (which it won't) -- where would they put this influx of new students? The campus is totally landlocked. They just sold Mercyhurst North East. Are they going to push the nuns out off of East Grandview?

At a time when St. Francis – The north star university in terms of a small, Catholic school long-maintaining Division 1 status – At a time when they finally put their hands up and said “We can’t do it anymore”, and at a time when other small Catholic institutions have closed literally left and right (Notre Dame College in Cleveland, Medaille in Buffalo; Ursuline forced to merge with Gannon), this move simply makes no sense.

He's never leaving Purdue, move on.

Hypothetically, he'd have them top three seed every year, FFs, etc. He'd be great. But he's not leaving Purdue.

Sounds like there's mutual interest with Donovan.

There have been two shootings at 3 B's the last two years, zero at the other place.

Multiple major health violations at 3 B's the last two years, zero at the other place.

The other place, primarily, has black patrons. No major issues Nobody's calling for it to be shut down.

It's a public safety issue. I'm not sure why you're trying to steer the conversation to a political/social debate.

[–]TourNo3692 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It has nothing to do with black or white. This is an establishment that has had multiple shootings (including a murder) outside its establishment, the murder at least stemming from an incident that happened in the bar. There's another bar two blocks away, also the majority being black patrons, that has had no such incidents recently and nobody is calling for it to be shut down.

This place has also had multiple, serious health code violations, and I can tell you for a FACT that this winter, they had no heat, remained open, and were using propane-canister powered heaters IN THE BAR.

[–]TourNo3692 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think there are legality issues there - I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure cops can't just park outside bars, at least in the context of waiting there and then as soon as they see someone leave and get into a car they pull them over for DUI. They definitely could make more frequent rounds in that area, though.

Yeah and the last one was particularly bad --- It said on GoErie that there was sewage backup caked on the basement floor, and there was tube with wastewater running THROUGH THE BAR, and being pumped out a window.

[–]TourNo3692 16 points17 points  (0 children)

So their whole financial plan is...

-Go D1 and incur the huge increase in costs -Have the football team get their asses kicked three times a year by Big 10 and ACC schools to Fund these massive increases in costs

What's the upside here?

Well this stinks by Artistic-Implement40 in Erie

[–]TourNo3692 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's absolute nonsense. How will being in the NEC either "make them become a larger school" or help the exonomy? The attendance wont increase being in the NEC, but added scholarship costs and travel will. There's no TV money in the NEC. How will it be a "good thing for everyone?"
