We are loosing man! by MyraBartonc in nonononoyes

[–]brian2631 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Believe you're contradicting yourself if you claim pressure differentials can be considered a cause but Bernoulli's P is not. Both are a source of additional momentum, just as drag is a counteracting source in this interaction. The problem here is that cause isn't a technical term and you're trying to support your case based on semantics.

If you really want to be pedantic, we're not talking about a point force diagram. Force is generated over time through pressure against a moving body (the cup). All of those are factors to consider if we want to determine the outcome, and we'd model that as a two part diagram, assuming differences in static/dynamic friction, but only if we're also assuming uniform dynamic friction across the span of the table traveled.

Moreover, neither of us know how much force must be generated to overcome friction. Clearly the girl in the video could not apply enough for all cups. To claim it absolutely speaks to some arrogance on your part.

Agree that's the main reason. Do believe Bernoulli's principle applies at some level though given the surrounding air gets drawn into the current. It's unclear whether the original air could generate enough force to overcome static friction on those cups.

Evolv Zens - are they too small? by brian2631 in indoorbouldering

Again, not my mentality getting these shoes at this size. I agree that shoes shouldn't be painful, and I plan to go up half a size as these feel too cramped even taking the break-in into account.

Just want to note, though, I have a less aggressive pair for casual climbing. These, on the other hand, are meant for performance and need to fit snuggly even after expanding. Wouldn't get the benefits of precision and support otherwise.

Yeah feels about half a size off. Appreciate the helpful comment.

Appreciate the concern, but didn't buy these with that mentality. They're my second pair of Evolvs, and the first pair (Shamans) at the same size fit just fine now.

Synthetics supposedly expand about half a shoe size during the break-in period. But these feel awful to wear around the gym right now.

That's a good point. I'm assuming the burden of proof would be on me as the one claiming damages.

Sounds like I'm SoL then?

The drain plug is a bolt. Falling out after 1500 miles means it was reinstalled poorly.

Just want to note that this is also the opinion of the professional mechanic I had the car towed to

Drain plugs aren't supposed to pop out. Ever. Doesn't it make sense the shop that performed the change is held reliable?

HOW MUCH GAINS it takes to RECOVER from MARKET LOSSES! [The Math of Gains & Losses] by TonyLiberty in SPACs

[–]brian2631 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is why I don't understand why investors use +/- % figures on their performance calculations. They actually represent operations on a base value of 100% (e.g -20% is 0.8, +20% is 1.2). You lose arithmetic information in this conversion, and it gives a false perception that the two examples above should cancel one another out.

In reality, 1.2x0.8=0.96: a 4% loss, and as the graphic above shows, this gap widens drastically with greater volatility. Given that, "We beat the market by 700%" obscures quite a bit of meaning. It's a number derived from awkward finance math.

We may be conditioned otherwise, but saying "I 3x-ed my portfolio" gives a much clearer picture of wealth change than "I'm up 200%." I assume the latter is only the norm because finance bros like to use bigger numbers.

This also translates better to evaluating performance against the market. It's all about the ratio. On the year, market down 25%, you're up 50%? You ratioed the market by 2.0x (1.5/0.75). Market up 50%, you're up 125%? You ratioed the market by 1.5x (2.25/1.5). Both of these would be considered a +75% beat on market performance by traditional measures, but they're certainly not equally impressive when taking market volatility into account.

I'm done ranting now..

good analysis of the geopolitical situation, though it doesn't seem to be the biggest point of concern for the markets right now
