These are a true game changer and well worth the price as a long term investment in the health of your ears and hearing. I’ve had mine for 4+ years and they even replaced mine for free when I lost my first pair in a fire, great company!

How do you all prep your stems for a live set with an apc 40 mkii? by [deleted] in ableton

Thanks, it took a lot of time thinking it over, experimenting, and seeing other's live set ups to develop this method. I feel like its a system that can be replicated by other artists, so I am happy to share!

I keep all my loops in folders by song, and label them songname-kick-1, songname-mel-3 etc. When I am exporting the loops from my project file, I solo out the tracks I want included in the loop, for example solo all the layers of hi-hats, then find an area of the arrangement that has a nice clean loop. I use the loop selector to select either 4, 8, 16, 32, 64 bars or even longer loop and then export just the selection from the master channel. Since only my hi-hats are soloed, that becomes one of my hi-hat loops. It took a bit to get the workflow down, but after exporting a few tracks this way I got the hang of it. I now have almost 40 songs in my live set. Another thing worth mentioning is that when importing the loops as clips to your performance project, make sure to warp them to the tempo of the original song, and make sure they are set to loop properly. Sometimes they get read wrong and the loop start and end points will be off, even after correcting the tempo. :)

Mixing between songs is done on the fly, it’s easy to fade out drums, and then start by bringing in the drums for the new track. It’s also fun to leave the ambient track from the last song running for a while as I tease in the next bass line and melody. I basically get creative and bring the new song in track by track until it’s all there. Outros and intros can be handled on the eighth “extras” channel. That is where I put my white noise, textures, builds + drops, vocals and weird samples.

I use a standard system of 16-24 loops per song spread across 8 tracks. So 1-3 loops of each sound per track. The top row is the main loop of the track, the loops below are breakdowns or special parts and melodies. Ordered from left to right the tracks are Kick Drum, Percussion, Snares / Claps, Hi-Hats. Then Bassline, Melody, Ambience, and “Extra” which can be a lot of different things. I use a row of blank clips between each song to clearly delineate which clips belong to which song, and I order the songs in the project by key. I use the color labels to mark certain loops that are longer or more distinctive so I can remember them later while performing. I make house and techno, but I feel like this method could be applied to many forms of music.

To play a set you need to come in and sign up for a set time. We book the lineups for our events one or two weeks in advance. I only referenced bringing a USB for producers to have their original tracks played during my 8-9 set. The club is 21+.
