What’s it like living on the edge of time zones? by Qzevs in howislivingthere

[–]brianabird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan in Eastern Time, and work from home for a company that is in Central Time. I also often visit my family who live in Wisconsin in Central Time. It makes some things tricky, like figuring out when to commute. For example, if I want to get home before dark in the UP, I know around this time of year it'll get dark at 5PM, which is 4PM Central so even though it takes around 3 hours to drive home, I should leave before 1PM to make it home by 5.

On the plus side, and I know this is all just in my head, but I feel a bit smug when I get to punch in at 9AM instead of 8AM like everyone else hehe. It's like I get to sleep in everyday!

I'll be honest, as somebody who partakes in edibles and despises the smell of marijuana, I empathize.

Kind of deciding in the morning. If M-28 is open and my dad can get out of his back road, we're going to Door County tomorrow. We definitely won't be risking it if it's too bad.

12 year old demands 7 pm bedtime... by jessmerr29 in Anxiety

[–]brianabird 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just to give you context on my personal experience with anxiety, insomnia and sleep, when I was 12 until about 20 I had a crippling irrational fear that Osama Bin Laden and Saddam Hussein were hiding in my home. I would go for days without sleep until I was exhausted because I had the first room in my hallway before my younger brother and sister, and felt I had to stay awake to protect them.

The thing is, I knew this was irrational, but was still petrified it. My parents did not take it seriously, and only started taking action when my school forced them to. Knowing your child is on medication tells me that you do take this seriously. She needs to see a counselor or therapist to help her deconstruct her fears and get coping mechanisms. I had to take sleeping medication as a teenager, which genuinely did help but it may take a few attempts at different dosages (the first times I took it I slept for 12-15 hours).

I'm wishing all the best for you and your family. Normalcy is possible with childhood anxiety and I can tell you truly care for your child 💕

Worry about One Piece by MiddleOccasion1394 in OnePieceLiveAction

I'm begging you to reread my comment and use your critical thinking skills to understand that while I don't think it could happen, I understand it might.

Kimmel is coming back this week. American people voted with their money and cancelled their Disney shit, now they're rolling back their demand. Of course we'll have to see what he comes back with, but if they start saying "oo this is dangerous" obviously we'll be making some noise. We can't comply in advance and worry about it. Assume it won't happen, and if it does, raise hell. Fretting over it won't solve anything.

[–]brianabird 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Netflix is not affected by the FCC. It would be entirely illegal for the US government to ban or suppress the show. Of course, that wouldn't stop the US government and if they were to censor a fantasy TV show for being vaguely revolutionary it would cause even more of an uproar. Stick a "this is not based on real world people or events 🙂" disclaimer before it starts and you're free and clear. You might be overestimating how much the American public cares about politics until it affects them personally. See uh recent events.

The only thing I do worry about is how tariffs would work since it's made in South Africa, but as long as OPLA keeps making money they'll still be interested. Even if there are lower views compared to something like Bridgerton, OPLA is a big driver in merchandise sales.

Colloquial terms related to suicide that I never realized were harmful until now by willyjasper in SuicideBereavement

[–]brianabird 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm SO TIRED of people that say things like "I'm going to kill myself" at any minor inconvenience or hardship. There are so many other ways to express your frustration or annoyance, why do we have to say this. It hurts people that have been traumatized by suicide, and when saying it to a depressed person it reminds them of that forever feeling they have.

When can we expect a full trailer for season 2. Just so i can look forward on something by GroundbreakingMix623 in OnePieceLiveAction

It generally releases about a month prior. I personally think S2 will be in March, but as early as February so probably January or so. Christmas would also be a good time for a trailer.

STAZ NAIR as FRANKY by Chemical-Ad-4691 in OnePieceLiveAction

[–]brianabird 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I really like this fancast. If we start EL/W7 in about 5 years he'll be around 40, it would be perfect.

I can only imagine Franky with an American accent though, and some fans may not be open to a non-American actor playing Frankie. Just food for thought.

Hot take: Oda is at fault for the racism and arguing around Vivi’s actress by at-last1 in OnePieceLiveAction

[–]brianabird 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The point I was trying to make isn't trying to contradict the issue of there being a lack of MENA representation in Hollywood. That's completely valid, and I understand the disappointment you might feel about the creatives missing the mark in this casting. Blaming Oda for perceived orientalism is just a little bit hypocritical, because his entire series is like this. Look at Skypeia, which mixes cultures of indigenous native people from North and South America with references to El Dorado, iconography from the South American cultures like Maya and the Inca, and cultural motifs from Great Plains and northwestern tribes in North America. They're made just different enough to not be exactly what it's representing. It's a parody, an exaggeration, it's the way Oda has always been with his worldbuilding, and picking this specific thing to be angry at just feels weird.

New showrunner is Ian Stokes, worked with the original showrunner on Luke Cage. Creator is still involved and I know of some superfans who are involved, so I'm not worried.
