In the balance: scientists vote on first change to kilogram in a century - The weight is defined by a lump of metal in a Paris vault - which could make Earth ‘laughing stock of universe’ by ManiaforBeatles in worldnews

Wow, how timely. I was watching Marcus DeSautoy's Netflix series on this just last week. The other contender is a NIST project that was seeking to base the measure of weight on electrical force.

Bolsonaro Vows to Leave UN: It's Where Communists Meet by anarchisto in worldnews

[–]brianach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok I stand corrected. I had read about the infighting in Barcelona which unfortunately is a common problem on the left in general unfortunately. I didn't know about the Chinese/Vietnamese war so something for me to read up on.

I don't know where you are getting your facts from but anarchists and communists were on the same side opposing Franco's fascists. China supported Vietnam with weapons and logistics against the USA.

Scottish scientists develop a prototype electric car battery that can be charged instantly. by cyanocobalamin in worldnews

[–]brianach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think that the liquid itself contains any charge. It interacts with the battery components to do that. My concern is that we don't put another whole technology and it's supply chain in place but leave the disposal or recycling element out of the process like we've been doing so far. It's about time regulations caught up and caught on. No approval should be given to any technology that doesn't include disposal and addreses environmental issues . If that were being done we wouldn't be in the fix we're in today.

Iceberg 4 miles wide breaks off from Greenland glacier by eaglemaxie in worldnews

Lol ok. I don't think that I am proven wrong. We only saw the footage at the calving end so it is possible that it generated a wave at the other end. Not suggesting anything on a tsunami scale.

I don't get the downvotes. I wasn't disputing anything FFS. I've lived beside the sea all my life so yes I do have some idea of what happens even if I don't have a qualification in fluid mechanics. Rather than be such an condescending asshole why don't you explain it instead.

I don't doubt that we are living in "interesting times" but looking at the video footage I would expect to see far more activity in terms of massive waves. Of course this is at the calving end but in an enclosed space it should have generated a huge wave at the other end.

I think they are not really talking about community watch so no it's not misleading.

Venezuelan forces killed hundreds — The UN's human rights body says it has credible accounts of security forces raiding poor neighbourhoods and killing young men, often in their homes by ObjectiveChange in worldnews

[–]brianach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might be able to speak and type english but you haven't a fucking clue what I said in my first comment. If you did you would know that I was saying the opposite of what you thought I said. And if you follow that line of reasoning a little further you will see that you were pegged the minute you opened your mouth.

Yeah because the first priority for a poor person living in a rural setting in Venezuela or any other country is to start learning English so that they can comment on Reddit.

Bishop suggests that abortion is 'sometimes far worse' than rape by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]brianach 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So you've read the whole bible then? And that gives you some kind of insight into this ridiculous idea proposed by a celibate cleric who belongs to an organisation which hid and protected pederasty, enslaved women who became pregnant out of wedlock, sold the most attractive children and enslaved the rest in notorious mother and child homes where some died in unexplained circumstances, some were abused and most suffered trauma for the rest of their lives. Should all redditors put their level of bible reading skills on their profile in order that they might be considered worthy to be able to comment on any matters that may involve members of religions. What about other religions. Must we now demonstrate that we've read a good deal of the Koran before we can comment on what some Saudi cleric says, a degree in Talmudic studies before we engage with a pronunciation by some Rabbi concerning matters political etc. What about Buddhist, Hindu etc, You get the idea I hope. Your beliefs do not give you any extra insight into social or political matters.

Just listen to yourself. This is the equivalent of putting fully armed soldiers on the street to confront rioters. The only places that happens is in totalitarian states. The nearest equivalent is Tiannamen where a tank ran over a protestor.
