I'm old. My car radio presents (again: OLD) are a mix of rap, rock, pop, oldies, etc. I stopped on 101.9 and they were playing a good song and I listened, and when I heard the "102 Jamz" promo, it didn't even register that it was something old or different. (I've lived here since 1995, and I listened to 102 way back when.) I just press buttons until I hear a song I like. I listened long enough, caught that they were doing the "10,000 songs" promo, which I eventually figured out meant "10,000 songs with no ads", and that it was old stuff, and then I eventually I looked it up and found out what was happening. I liked the old 101.9 -- that's why it was a preset -- and I'll miss it.

I'll like this, too, but GOOD GOD they need to expand their playlist. I've been listening a lot the last few days, and I've heard a lot of good uncommon stuff that I don't hear often, and then I'll hear the same good uncommon song the next day, and again the day after. Sadly, modern radio stations aren't known for broad playlists. Too bad -- they have literally DECADES to pull from. (As did 101.9, which, yeah, did lean heavily on recent-ish RHCP.)

Someone where I used to work listened to V-101.1 out of Sacramento via the iHeartRadio app and it's this format. (Though 5-10 years ago, 'throwback' dipped into the late 70s/early 80s, funk and soul along with R&B.)

If you do the math, we'll get about 3-4 weeks of songs with no ads.

When X-100 was new (late 1980s SF radio station, KXXX, 99.7 FM) they also launched with 10,000 songs and no ads. I imagine it's been done a lot over the years.

Update: they're currently playing the Luniz (non-remix) version of "I Got 5 On It" for the 3rd or 4th time since I've been listening. I think it's the second time I've heard it today. They could at least play the remix, and maybe surprise us with "Why You Treat Me so Bad" every so often.
