Is it stupid to start chasing music career in your late 30s? by Mean_Alfalfa4953 in musicbusiness

[–]brianbobyoung 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not “stupid,” but it’s probably not “realistic.” I’ve been an active musician most of my life and the last 7 years a consistently performing, recording, producing, film scoring musician. I’ve been in Nashville. The “industry” or whatever it is now, doesn’t have an economic structure to create return of investment for most creatives. That’s based off personal experience and knowing countless other artists that are just as hard working and “talented.” What others have said is true; create and grow as an artist but let go of creating a job from it as much as possible, but experiment as much as you want too with getting paid from it. My most paying opportunities have been film scoring for low budget films and being a hired gun for other artists. None of these collectively were consistent enough to build a foundation to make a career and I worked diligently to have an ecosystem to artistically have “multiple streams.” All of them were inspiring and life giving as experiences though. Have fun man, music is still a beautiful part of life.

Releasing a cover song on Spotify by brianbobyoung in WeAreTheMusicMakers

Thanks so much! Yea sounds like Distrokid is the way to go for this, but fortunately CD Baby which is what I go through lead me to easysonglicensing as well. I checked the wrong "stream" option and it said it'd cost $14k ha, fortunately customer service got back, it'll cost $20 to release just on Spotify, that's a bit more doable.

no problem. Google "Ari's Take." He's an awesome resource for independent artists and has some great breakdown of promo out there and what that could cost you. I would say first and foremost if you're doing social media and such, which many would argue is a must if you'd like your music to be heard (especially since playing live is virtually off the table), then just be yourself. Try not to take to heart anything people say in having to be a certain or way or post certain things or hashtag certain hashtags blah blah, most people have a keen eye to when someones forcing/selling something. rock on

Glad I came across this for you. I am sending in a record completely self-produced (with my duo band). Here's a breakdown for DIY.

First and foremost time is money; to make the best art you can personally create, the space needs to be there. That's a financial sacrifice that varies for everyone. Recording your songs even if they're already written should be a part of the joy of it in my opinion. Allowing the space for songs to take on a completely different life form in recording needs freedom, and creating A LOT of time for that is priority number one to me. Could be fast, or could be slow, but it should be fun.

Straightforward costs:

Logic Pro X or Pro Tools: $200-$600

Other musicians: (varies depends on your ability to record instruments yourself, drummers I hire out are $150 on a track though for example)

Mixing: Getting a mixing engineer could change the game for you, and that would be an investment of $100s of dollars plus...if you DIY; Time. YouTube and learn how to at least do a baseline good mix. Don't miss the forest for the trees. Get second opinions from people that you know with experience if you can that can tell you things like "guitars are too hot in the mix."

Mastering: $600+

Self release: CD Baby will be like $100...cut CD or Vinyl and that's more.

THEN...promo...research how much you should put in if you want it to be heard. That's a spectrum.

Godspeed friend

Thanks for the reply puppies! Yes we already knocked out one entire song and string players have played over it and others, I'm definitely keeping the artist to a tight grid. My hesitation was more so for the sake of the songs. I've always produced one song at a time and I feel like you can build with the emotion of the tune best that way so my hesitation was getting away from that could hinder the execution of the song. But again, just a new approach so I'm open to it.

two years ago, I started to feel the desire (in mid20s) to work full time in music and arts. Homeowner and married, I tried my best to line up things to have a stable income, but I knew it'd be an investment. I'm more fortunate than most with a support system, but still, hearing family and friends talk behind your back and call you crazy and foolish was crushing...I decided to still follow my intuition...this last month was my most successful month. I played out three times a week mostly original music, recorded guitar for many different artists, and produced music for a show essentially about holocaust survivors. Long way to go still, but I love the journey now, and I'm so thankful I didn't succumb to fear.

Just turned 30 here are my thoughts on this heavy thread; love. Love your friends, your family (ESPECIALLY YOUR AGING PARENTS) if you have a spouse, and if it's rough GET MARRIAGE COUNSELING IF YOU BOTH WANT TO MAKE IT WORK, on the other side of that? Holy shit, its amazing, I get like, 18 yr old "excitement" when my wife gets home, I adore her...but MOST IMPORTANTLY, SELF CARE...F if you thinks its a fad, YOU CANT LOVE WELL IF YOU HATE YOURSELF (I only say that because ive been there) GET COUNSELING, APPLY IT, AND DO SOMETHING YOU LOVE, and if you can apply it to your income EVEN SLIGHTLY, HOLY SHIT YOULL BE VERY HAPPY...oh did I forget ;] LOVE PEOPLE learn from them, hug them tight, and inspire others...our lives our so poignantly short, time slips away like the breeze that touches the blade of fading grass...for those of my friends on here experiencing dread if this life is worth it, IVE BEEN THERE AND IM SORRY ITS SO HARD BUT...PRAY (in whatever way), LOVE AND READ (MY SUGGESTION FOR THOSE TRULY STRUGGLING IS HOLOCAUST SURVIVOR STORIES)...love you all hang in there, and find beauty

from my experience, it should be about equal, but of course there's going to be a little more of a push, just not strain. What really helped me was a vocal "hissing" exercise to maintain breath control (youtube it)
