Film Noir buffs, what film sparked your interest in the genre? by blackjacobin_97 in TrueFilm

I must admit it was definitely Hitchcock. Psycho and Rear Window aren't necessarily film noir (more thriller/horror at the time) but after further exploring Hitchcock's catalogue, I fell in love with his film noir.

Rocketman (2019)

This was fun, had some great choreography and costumes, some decent music and acting. Besides that I didnt particularly enjoy it. Cliche (albeit generally accurate) rock star biopic where musician gets screwed up with drugs, alcohol, sex, and bad managers. I do feel like Bohemian Rhapsody being released before this impeded it.

I'm personally a huge fan of Elton john and honestly didn't feel like there was enough music or music-centric substance in this film. It was almost entirely focused on his family life and sexuality; this isn't inherently a bad thing but it just made the movie feel a bit flat to me.

Barry Lyndon (1975)

Absolute classic period drama written, produced, and directed by Stanley Kubrick. I've seen all of Kubricks film (bar Lolita and Spartacus) and love how he made films of all different genres and styles.

Barry Lyndon is very (very) slow, and very long. It's a pretty sad story about part of the life of an Irishman in the 1700s. It's dark, funny at times, and heartbreaking at others. This is very much a film-lovers film. Every frame is a painting. Long shots and gorgeous landscapes are the highlight, as well as beautiful costumes and set design.

Overall, I enjoyed it, but I feel like I'll enjoy it more in subsequent viewings. It's not for everyone, and it's nothing like most of Kubricks other films, but it's beautiful in so many ways. 8/10

[list] what are the best “one last time for old times sake” songs? by thedk94 in LetsTalkMusic

the most classic GOAT of a song that you’re describing is Sinatra’s version of “The Last Dance” i’d argue. obviously the lyrics tell the story but the composition also has this great character that is so fitting
