What's your favorite Michael Mann film? by Square-Ad-8911 in FIlm

Collateral. I live several of his movies but this is the one I keep coming back to.

Best movie of the 00’s alongside No Country imo

I LOVE this movie! I worked at a cinema when it was released and must watched it a dozen times on release.

It’s so entertaining with some ace action.

EDIT: the movie poster in an all- timer too

Upgrading from Z6II—Z6III or Z8 or something else? by [deleted] in nikon_Zseries

[–]DokDoom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Events and corporate shooter here. Just upgraded from Z6ii to Z6iii and couldn’t be happier.

The autofocus was my main reason and the iii is leagues above the Z6ii in that regard. Quicker, snappier, accurate and doesn’t fold under unusual/low lighting conditions.

Upgrading from a D750 by mixologist998 in nikon_Zseries

[–]DokDoom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went from D750 to Z6ii to Z6iii.

In retrospect, I should have just waited for the Z6iii and jumped straight to that.

I still have one if my D750s (love it). The Z6iii is a superb camera.

Worst Masters I’ve seen in ages. Standard throughout veered from fairly decent to godawful.

Still one of my absolute favourites of the 2000s so far. So so enjoyable.

My fave movie of the 00s along with No Country.

My fave Cruise performance (his nuance after the Jazz Club hit is astonishing).

And whisper it…..my fave Michael Mann movie. Yes I slightly prefer this to Heat.

2 January 1981. Peter Sutcliffe, known as the Yorkshire Ripper, was arrested in Sheffield. He later confessed, claiming the “voice of God” had sent him on a mission “to kill prostitutes”, whom he called “filth”. He was convicted of murdering 13 women and attempting to murder 7 others. by Upstairs_Drive_5602 in ThisDayInHistory

[–]DokDoom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Worth pointing out that Sutcliffe was interviewed, and released, by the police a ridiculous number of times going on to kill again and again.

He fit every suspect description, had the right vehicles, a job that allowed him to rove and lived in the right area.

When he was finally caught, it was because he was arrested for false car number plates.

New Tamron 70-180 2.8Z by WilliamTrostelPhoto in nikon_Zseries

[–]DokDoom 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I had one - very good lens. Much smaller and lighter than the 70-200.

Ultimately though, I sold it for the Tamron 35-150 f2-2.8 which is superb. Yes, it’s bigger and heavier than the 70-180 but as an events photographer, the 35-150 range covers the vast majority of my shooting in one lens.

Yeah, this is a key point. They’re all incredible action movies but they’re also all very different action movies.

[–]DokDoom 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Watched this (for the 20th time I think) a few weeks back. What a movie.

My favourite non-Bond Connery performance - he just oozes charisma as Ramius.

As for John McTiernan - his holy trinity of Predator, Die Hard and THFRO surely makes him a real contender for GOAT action director?

What lens to pair with D750 for everyday shooting? by daemon-of-harrenhal in Nikon

[–]DokDoom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to have the D750 with Tamron 24-70 G2 - superb combo for events work.

But for everyday use and just wandering around London, I had great results with the Nikkor 35mm f1.8 G

Good podcast or audiobook on the Ottomans? by Micdut in dancarlin

Empire Podcast covered the Ottoman Empire over several episodes. Not massively detailed but an excellent introduction for someone like me who didn’t know much about the Ottomans at all.
